INCREDIBLE MASK ART NOW
We know we just ran the 10 Most Beautiful Masks post two days ago, but we just found a whole new bunch of incredible mask art works that we need to add to the Most Beautiful list.
The Devil Masquerade Mask, by Grim Grimace and Squeak, has a bit of Calder, a bit of Victorian Goth, a bit of Picasso, but with an edgy attitude. The mask is is an intricate sculpture of black, burgundy, and red enamelled wires, with hand-beaded panels. The horns sparkle with silver-hearted glass seed beads. It ties with a black satin ribbon.

Designers Diane von Furstenberg, Manolo Blahnik, and Matthew Williamson, and others, recently created haute masks in support of the Elephant Family, an initiative that aims to protect Asian elephants and their habitat.

A surreal fantasy bird is a dramatic play of baroque color and form. The Peacock Debonair Beaked Mask, bears a shock of coque and peacock feathers. The mask is burnished and embellished with turquenite, goldstone, pyrite, metal, and Swarovski crystals.

If Rousseau were to throw a masquerade party, the Greenman Mask, by artist Linda Winiger, would be the mask to wear. Made of airbrushed leather, coaxed into fluid Nouveau swirls, this mask is impossibly graceful. A real acorn is perched, like a beauty mark.

We found another handpainted leather Green Man mask, with a related feel, but a different look. This is a Flower-Inspired Fairy Mask, by Crimson Spark. It channels O’Keefe, with a splash of pinks and greens, festooned with agate leaf beads -- It is what I would wear if I was masquerading as springtime.

This funky Steampunk Gentleman Rabbit, by artist Andrea Masse-Tognetti, looks like it is made of porcelain, but it is another leather mask masterpiece. It is a mixed media piece, with goggle parts, clock bits, gears, and other hardware findings. Merimask, the artist’s studio has designed for Cirque du Soleil and other productions.

The Majectic Lion Mask is a Venetian marvel, in authentic papier-mâché. The smooth, almost polished, surfaces, and richly carved mask-within-a-mask, are skinned in gold leaf and dotted with Swarovski crystals.
