Looking back over a year of art exhibitions in our quest for Best of 2020, we've gathered some of our favorites from The Armory Show, New York City’s premier art fair. It features some of the world’s most important 20th- and 21st-century art, represented by leading international galleries. This annual show has served as a nexus for the art world since its founding in 1994, where top collectors come to satisfy their passions.

Today, we present selected works by photographer Sebastiaan Bremer, represented by Edwynn Houk Gallery & Galerie Ron Mandos.

Check them out below.

Memories are always a fusion of “record” and evolving interpretation, producing their own form of “reality.” Artist Sebastiaan Bremer’s works capture this phenomenon in a fusion of photography and painting --  unique hand-painted chromogenic prints with mixed media.

The inked photographs are reminiscent of the “spirit photographs” of the 1800’s. There is a magic air about them.

At first blush, it appears as though the photographic images are randomly spattered with colored ink dots or a fantastic drift of pollen, however Bremer strategically places and layers his marks to evoke the passage of time.

In his recent book, To Joy, Bremer writes, “My kids often talk of time travel, and when I’m in a good mood I tell them I do it all the time. It might be a condition of my lack of formal training in the arts, but in my process and interest I look less at my peers than I do at my antecedents. And it makes little difference to me if they were working fifty or five hundred years ago.”

Bremer, who was born and raised in Holland, references Dutch Old Masters paintings, noting dramatic lighting and fascinating compositions of their still lifes.

In this body of work entitled ‘Bloemen,’ Bremer adds small dots of carefully matched colored acrylic to floral-centered compositions, calling upon images of galaxies and space.

These multimedia works convey the artist’s exuberance and passion for life, color, and freedom of expression.

Bremer's works have been shown at numerous public and private institutions, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Tate Modern, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
