SOUNDS BEAUTIFUL: VINTAGE RADIOS RE-IMAGINED AS MOBILE DEVICE SPEAKERS

With their space-age logos reading “Star Lite” or “Musaphonic” and sleek designs in plastic, brass, and chrome, every time I see a vintage radio in an antique store, I’m tempted to take it home. But though they’re flush with classic style, vintage radios tend to be low on functionality, limited to AM frequencies when they work at all. So I was thrilled to see them getting new life from Seattle’s Mod Radio, where radio chassis in a medley of hues from soft pink to vivid orange are completely dismantled, cleaned, and then fitted with a new amplifier, wiring, and speakers to become a modern speaker system for a mobile device. The end results are perfect mash-ups of contemporary sound and vintage style. Each Mod Radio incorporates original knobs as controls, while flush-mounted speakers are both front- and back-facing to deliver stereo sound quality as gorgeous as each radio’s design.
