THE MOST BEAUTIFUL REDUX
When we found the incredible hats, designed by Sonya Sanchez Arias, we fell in love with them instantly. Then, when we realized they were part a recycling design body of work, entitled “Reclaimed Beauty,” we fell even harder.

“There is great satisfaction in transforming one material, having one purpose, into something entirely different,” says Arias.

Arias used black garbage bags, brown paper bags, plastic shopping bags, foil, brown packing paper, twine, wire, and old ball chains to make these awesome accessories. They are fit for Eco-Goddesses, of course!

When you fuse together haute design with recycling sensibilities, you get haute upcycle that carries the best of both. It is the highest level or design and craft, typically reserved for the most expensive materials, now dedicated to garbage.

A lucky bunch of high school students, led by their teacher, Leah McCall, at Tellico Plains High School, in has been on the case. They poke and prod and stretch our perception of what beauty can be.

McCall's fashion design class was charged with creating a fashion line made completely from recycled materials. Old magazines, newspaper, plastic forks and spoons, garbage bags and tin cans, were transformed into catwalk-ready designs.

We haven’t been able to find out much about the artist who recycled this jacket. We know that her name is April D. Bates, of Saint Petersburg, FL. We know that she uses dye, ink, and acrylic paint to transform old clothing into new works of art.

Rure’s ottoman and stool are made from American white oak and recycled silk yarns from Nepal. The ethnic-inspired design, with its jewel-toned puffs, feel like a dream to sit upon. They come shipped with disassembled legs to lessen their carbon footprint. But it’s a cinch to put together, so no worries there.
She won IMMIB Industrial Design competition both in 2011 and 2013.

This total upcycle is a total joy. Recycled plastic shopping bags transform into a gorgeous post-modern chair called Inuku, by South African designer Ryan Frank. Combining traditional local craft techniques with recycled bag materials, Frank has created an edgy portfolio of furniture and furnishings for corporate and private collections.
We love the rich colors and textures in Frank’s pieces.

This simple set of magazine baskets is handmade, of tightly coiled recycled magazine strips. The randomized glints of color that flit through the coils pop, making the baskets look fresh in almost any setting. And they hold cargo that may one day be turned into more baskets, for a never ending recycling story.
