NEW SUPER-RED SUPER-HEALTHY FRUITS

Redlove apples and red currants.

Red fruits contain high levels of anthocyanins, powerful antioxidant compounds that reduce oxidative stress in living cells, helping to prevent and fight disease.

Different colors typically mean foods have different vitamins and minerals.

Lycopene and anthocyanins are two of the antioxidants found in red fruits and vegetables that can fight heart disease and prostate cancer, decrease the risk for stroke and macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness in people aged 60 and older), to name just a few examples.

Red fruits and veggies also are rich in vitamin A (beta carotene), vitamin C, manganese, and fiber, making them great for heart health and overall good health, too. Plus, red apples have quercetin, a compound that helps to fight colds, flus, and allergies.

Today, we are sharing 2 exciting new red fruits, each with a whole bunch of benefits: Redlove Apples and Queen Garnet Plums.

Redlove is a recently developed apple variety that opens up to a gorgeous red flesh. Even their blossoms are unique in their deep red color.

“Love” is part of their name in reference to the red heart-shaped pattern created by their seed structure which appears in a vertical slice through the Redlove apple.

Redlove apples were bred by nurseryman Markus Kobelt, of Lubera, in Canton St. Gallen, Switzerland. Kobelt spent 20 years cultivating them, completely naturally, without any genetic modification. The trees were grown in tunnels, rather than outdoors, so that there would be no random pollination from bees.

Thanks to their red flesh, Redloves have a 30 to 40% higher anthocyanin content than conventional apple varieties.

Lubera now offers cultivation licenses internationally. Cultivars include Redlove Calypso, Redlove Circe, Redlove Era, Redlove Lollipop, and Redlove Odysso.

Queen Garnet plum.

A red, juicy, sweet, delicious plum that also helps you stay younger and lose weight! Yes please!

Australia's Queen Garnet plums have extraordinarily high levels of anti-aging anthocyanins -- up to 10 times more than other plums. But beyond the antioxidant benefits of this beautiful red fruit, new research by the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) suggests that Queen Garnet plums can also aid in weight-loss.

Juicy red plum.

The Queen Garnet variety of plum was created by plant breeders, employed by the Australian government, who were trying to make a disease-resistant version of the common Japanese plum. They then began to experiment, testing the plum’s other attributes.

The researchers found that when they added a few drops of Queen Garnet plum juice to the drinking water of obese rats, the rats shed most of their excess weight within 8 weeks.

While further testing is needed for humans before anyone can claim that Queen Garnet plums are diet food, the lush red flesh, encased in tender purple skin, is a decadent treat. Check it out in Rockpool Bar & Grill’s “Queen Garnet Plum Tart.” As a bonus, each Queen Garnet will also give you between 10-30mg of vitamin C.

The Queensland government sold the global license to sell Queen Garnet plums to Nutrafruit, an Australian farming cooperative.

Beyond Australia, Queen Garnet plum trees have now been planted in Europe, where the first commercial fruit became available August 2017.

There are also plans to produce Queen Garnet in South Africa, North Africa, New Zealand, South America and North America.
