EXTREME PEAKS ARE BEAUTIFUL NOW
ALPINE EXPOSURES -- JON GRIFFITH
The tops of the planet’s highest mountains offer extreme thrills and beauty to those who dare to climb. Jon Griffith offers us a vicarious extreme experience with his new photobook, Alpine Exposures.
An award-winning sports photographer and avid extreme climber, Griffith has scaled the most dramatic peaks in the Alps, Patagonia, Alaska, and the Himalayas, taking photos of alpine, rock and ice climbing, backcountry skiing, BASE jumping, paragliding and speedriding.
Griffith uses his own technical mountaineering skill to capture the most extreme shots.
He pushes the daredevil envelope to even further extremes in that he doesn’t use a camera case, leash, or lens cap while he navigates sheer vertical mountain faces. He believes that “excess” equipment will impede his opportunity to capture the best shots. Fortunately, to date, he’s never broken anything.
This book is a “scrapbook,” detailing a decade of Griffith’s adventures, featuring some of the world’s most elite alpine climbers tackling the most spectacular summits of the European Alps, from the Eiger North Face to Mont Blanc.
With detailed captions accompanying every photo, the book offers a photographic guide to some of the most beautiful climbs, ski descents, and flying terrains. Longer photo essays showcase classic monumental climbs.
Griffith is a stickler for “honest” unedited photos, eschewing the “hyper-real,” Photoshopped styles and staged or reenacted shots prevalent in many current mountain sports photography. That’s just one of the many reasons why Griffith is superstar alpinist Ueli Steck’s main photographer.
This is a perfect book for your coffee-table, whether it inspires you to climb a tall mountain or experience an extreme dream.
Excerpt from the Foreword by Ueli Steck:
“The one thing that will always be hard for me to accept is when we pack our bags and Jon puts in his heavy camera – I’m quite a stickler when it comes to keeping weight to a minimum, and my consolation for that now is in this book. Life in the present moment is what counts.”
“Experiences and encounters are what we keep and what shapes us. Jon’s photography conveys these experiences. He captures the authenticity and spirit of these moments in time and I’m glad that he at least is keeping a record of them.”
