BEAUTIFUL RIDER ON SOME WILDLY BEAUTIFUL STORMS NOW

JODY MILLER
Wild weather can be beautiful to see -- from afar, of course. Photographer Jody Miller chases the wildest weather, so we don’t have to, just to experience its magnificence.
While she has been a talented photographer for over 35 years, Miller has spent the past several years traveling across the midwestern US, searching for the most dramatic storms, hoping to capture them as they are forming.
In particular, Miller is after “supercell” thunderstorms that spin out tornadoes, although the captures any kind of storm that offers high drama. Sometimes Miller can follow a single storm for 3 or 4 hours.
“Tornado Alley” is a T-shaped corridor, running from central Texas up through northern Iowa and from central Kansas and Nebraska across to western Ohio. Miller spends a lot of time in these parts.
Miller also has a penchant for monsoons, capturing these mega-rainstorms in the American Southwest.
The energy of these superstorms is apparent in Miller’s images. The incredible light they produce is astonishing.
The daughter of fine artists, Miller grew up studying painting and drawing. Her 1st camera, a Kodak Brownie, was given to her at the age of 9.
Miller was fortunate enough to participate in the one of the last photography workshops Ansel Adams taught before his death in 1984. The experience impacted her greatly. It is evident in the majesty of her landscape images.
Since then, Miller has worked for 40 years as a designer & animator for the television industry in Hollywood.
“I am still passionately “chasing the light” and trying to present a slightly darker, edgier view of that light and the mysteries that lie therein,” says Miller. “I love the singular stories that can be found in the shadows and attempt to tell those stories with my photographs.”
