THE ART & SCIENCE OF BEAUTIFUL WEATHER NOW

1. SCOTT BURLOVICH

Intense storms evoke fear, and make us want to run far, far away… That is, until we saw these beautiful storm photos, taken by weather photographer Scott Burlovich.

Based in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, Burlovich captures mesmerizing moments when a massive storm strikes the landscape. He watches the weather forecast, and then gets into his photographing position long before the storm actually hits.

The result of this careful planning is breathtaking photography that almost makes us want to try it for ourselves.

The style of Burlovich’s photos is wonderful, because viewers can imagine themselves right at the scene of the storm. He always uses a simple foreground to add context, such as wind farms, abandoned houses, and colorful crops, such as canola.

He also uses perspective to show how enormous the storm is, although his positioning underneath it is often enough to demonstrate the size of the storm.

And there’s more to come! Burlovich is traveling across Western Canada this summer with photographer Spencer Sills. They’ll be photographing beautiful storms on the Canadian Prairies, so keep up with Burlovich on Twitter and Viewbug.

2. BETH ALLAN

Storm chaser and nature photographer, Beth Allan, takes beautiful photographs of extreme weather in Alberta, Canada. During the year, she works as a high school counselor, and in the summer she chases storms.

Allan was recently named the Huffington Post’s photographer of the month. She is able to capture the gorgeous prairie and mountain landscapes of Alberta, in the midst of wild weather.

According to Allan, the best way to get beautiful weather photos sometimes is to patiently wait, sometimes it requires returning to a place repeatedly, and sometimes it means chasing storm after storm. Sometimes it takes years for weather conditions to come together into the perfect shot.

Allan is particularly interested in the structure of storms. And she aims to travel to as many interesting destinations as possible to capture them.

3. MIKE MEZEUL II

Mike Mezeul II is an incredible weather photographer, who has chased storms and captured photos of beautiful weather all across the United States, from the Canadian border all the way down to Mexico.

Mezeul takes photos of colossal storms, such as supercell thunderstorms, unbelievable cloud patterns, massive lightning strikes, and powerful tornadoes.

He is passionate about photographing this tumultuous weather for its drama and its ephemeral nature. In the blink of an eye, a storm can pass through and disappear forever. Photos are all that can remain.

Mezeul lives for gargantuan moments delivered by beautiful weather events, such as when a 60,000-foot-tall thunderstorm shot lightning bolts at him, then threw down a tornado.

The foregrounds in Mezeul’s photos, focus the image and draw the viewer in, emphasizing just how enormous these storms can be.

Mezuel has been photographing storms for over 15 years, and says he’ll travel between 500-1,000 miles in a day to capture the perfect storm. Though his job is certainly dangerous, he usually stays a few miles away from the base of the storm while working.
