What’s better than a beach getaway? An escape to a pink beach! There are less than a dozen truly pink sand beaches in the world, so they are precious treasures. With pastel pink soft sands next to crystal clear turquoise seas, we think these beaches are among the most beautiful in the world.

Pink beaches get their rare color primarily from tiny bits of shattered or crushed red coral, pink shells, and foraminifera, a microscopic organism with its own reddish-pink shell, which mix together with white sand to form rosy hues.

While Bermuda is the place especially known for its sugary pink beaches, there are blushing beauties to be found in Greece, Italy, the Bahamas, and Indonesia that each have their own special charms. Some have become popular tourist spots, while others are so protected, you are not allowed to set foot on them -- only allowed to admire them from a safe distance aboard a boat.

Plan your escape to a pretty pink beach this spring or summer! Check out the inspiration below.

Elafonissi Beach, located in the southwest corner of Crete, is a protected nature reserve, graced with pink sand and crystal-clear aqua Mediterranean Sea waters. It’s best to enjoy this beach off-season, from late October to April, so you can experience this pink wonder all to yourself.

Wade across the shallow lagoon to the small, uninhabited island, where you will find an ancient lighthouse and chapel, along with more than 100 endemic plant species.

Bermuda is especially known for its pink sand beaches. The beach at Horseshoe Bay is perhaps the most beautiful. Escape and relax on its wide stretch of the pastel pink sand. The pink and red shells, coral, and calcium carbonate particles that make up this rosy mix have been crushed to a fine powder for a soft look and feel.

Elbow Beach Resort, founded in 1908, was the first luxe hotel on the island of Bermuda. It overlooks Elbow Beach, considered by many to be the best and most beautiful pink sand beach in the world. The beach stretches along 1 mile of a bright spot in the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the nearby Paget Marsh and Nature Reserve for an extra dose of pristine beauty.

Budelli Island, within the Maddalena Archipelago National Park, in Sardinia, offers up one of the world’s most beautiful beaches -- Spiaggia Rosa. This pink beach sand is richly endowed with tiny fragments of pink coral, granite, foraminifera, and shells.

Visitors can take day trips to the island to see Spiaggia Rosa, but they cannot set foot upon it or touch its pink sand. The Italian government protects this precious treasure vigorously.

Harbour Island, northwest of Eleuthera Island, in the Bahamas, is known for the long pink sand beaches stretching along its eastern shore. Known as "Briland" by its inhabitants, Harbour Island is approximately 3.5 miles long by 1.5 miles wide.

Known as Briland to the locals, Harbour Island is a bouquet of pastel colors, from the sands, sea, sky, and English Colonial-style cottages billowing with colorful flowers.

Outlying coral reefs like the Devil's Backbone make this a beautiful diving destination.

Tangsi Beach, on Lombok Island, Indonesia is a stretch of pink sand that offers a beautiful place to rest in-between dips into the calm clear waters of the Java Sea, near Bali. It offers a gorgeous launch pad for swimming and snorkeling. The warm turquoise sea water deposits millions of dead red coral fragments washed in from the seabed, which, when blended with the white sand, gives the beach a pinkish hue.

Komodo is just one of the 17,508 islands that belong to the Republic of Indonesia, but it is arguably among the most beautiful. While the island is particularly known as being home to the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard on Earth, it is also beloved for its gorgeous pink beaches.

Komodo Island is one of three larger islands and many islets that make up the Komodo National Park. The uninhabited island is a popular destination for scuba divers. The reef here is in excellent condition, with hundreds of species of both soft and hard corals, and thousands of species of tropical fish.

Pink Beach, aka Pantai Merah, gets its striking color from microscopic foraminifera and fragments of red coral. The locals call it “Red Beach.”

Enjoy panoramic pastel colored views of pink sand, turquoise seas, azure skies, and lush green hillsides.
