THE ART & BEAUTY OF SHOWERS NOW
CHRISTOPHER JACROT
Rainy vacations can be beautiful too. While most everyone hopes for sunshine, those who embrace the rain get to enjoy a special experience.
One day, Christophe Jacrot was assigned to take sunny photographs of Paris for a forthcoming guide book, when he was caught in heavy showers. Jacrot went ahead with the shoot, despite the downpour, and was surprised at the unexpected beauty he captured.
Jacrot’s images luxuriate in gorgeous grays, with overcast light. Droplets become jewels. Sheets of rain become watery veils through which iconic scenes command a new kind of recognition.
The blurs and washes soften hard edges, turning it all into impressionist paintings. There is a melancholy spirit. Jacrot’s photos feel like intimate portraits of cities that typically convey everything but intimacy.
While Jacrot’s photos make us want to stay cozily inside and look out our windows at the showers, they also highlight the special qualities of each place -== the ones that shine when they’re wet.
Trained as a photojournalist, Jacrot, now also known as Rain Man, travels around the world, intentionally shooting in the rain in each location.
“I developed a very particular relationship with “bad” weather, “ Jacrot explains, “an almost symbiotic romance that led me to create a poetic visual world based on changes in weather conditions.”
Jacrot pushes the romance of rainy days. His images deliver a dream-like experience, with atmospheric moods that are particular to each place.
From a typhoon in Hong Kong, to a torrential rain in Tokyo, from a monsoon in India to a blizzard in Bucharest, to the icy rain in Greenland and more, as he goes, the beauty of rain showers rules.
“I loved wandering through mega-cities as they grappled with weather phenomena,” Jacrot says.
Jacrot’s images remind us that rain is a critical part of life and part of our planet’s fragile equilibrium.
So next time you get caught in the rain, whether you are traveling to another place or just going about your daily life, look for the beauty delivered by the showers. And check out Jacrot’s website for more.
