BEAUTIFUL ART OBSESSIONS NOW
Great artists, more often than not, become obsessed by a theme, a subject, a technique, or even a particular color or material, with their best works coming to life once they have become totally consumed by that passion.
ADRIAN BRANNAN
Adrian Brannan is obsessed with photography, but not the way you would expect. Instead, this artist loves to slice up photos into little pieces, then assembles them, in new ways, to form vibrant new images.
The art of photomontage is not new, but Brannan’s approach is fresh. The photographs are taken from multiple vantage points, with different types of film, a range of processing techniques, and variety of lighting, taken at different times on different days.
Everything is shot on film, without the use of any digital processes in post production.
While some of Brannan’s works contain a mere 50 images, his latest pieces contain over one thousand individual 35mm film photographs, as his obsession grew.

JIM GOLDEN
For Portland-based photographer Jim Golden, it began with an obsession for scissors. He had collected more than 5,000 pairs when a friend asked him to photo-document them all.
Instead of photographing them individually, or from different angles, Golden laid all of the scissors out on the floor. Golden played around with the pairs, painstakingly arranging and rearranging them until they formed especially beautiful patterns.
Once the arrangements pleased him, he photographed them from above. The result was spectacular -- it launched a fascinating Collections Series, as Golden began to apply the same approach to other quirky objects.
No matter what the items, Golden manages to compulsively organize them into magnificent obsessively composed still lifes. From bicycle parts to everyday household objects, Golden’s genius for color schemes and placement, creates a beautiful narrative interplay.
Golden’s biggest challenge is in finding collections to photograph. But his artistry has attracted the attention of collectors, many of whom now commission him to photograph their collections.
XAVIER CASALTA
Xavier Casalta takes artistic obsession to a whole new level.
The French illustrator’s latest piece, “Autumn” is the first of a series of four illustrations (one for each of the four seasons.
Using a technique called stippling, which involves the micro-precision placement of dots using a .10mm black ink pen, Casalta renders his visions. Each 22” x 22” illustration contains around 7 million dots. Each piece takes about 370 hours of meticulous work to complete.
The results of his repetitive and ritualized work process are stunning. Each detail reveals three-dimensional lines and shadows that are as lush and inviting as a perfect photograph.
