BEAUTIFUL PRIDE: 10 MIND-BLOWING PRIZE-WINNING PHOTOS NOW

Today, we are showcasing 10 amazing prize-winning photographs from the first Siena International Photography Awards Competition, held recently in Siena, Italy.

1. SHOW TIME

Location: Balikesir, Nicosia (Cyprus)

 

Siena International Photography Awards Description: When mantises are afraid of something they raise their arms and spread their wings. It's a normal behavior. They defend themselves. The author took the image while he wanted to touch the mantises and they attacked him, opening their wings and started to follow him. They look like smiling dancers.

2. CAPPADOCIA AIR BALLOON

Location: Cappadocia (Turkey)

 

Siena International Photography Awards Description: In the Cappadocia region almost every day, just before dawn, about 100 balloons rise in the air simultaneously. A breathtaking spectacle made even more magical by the rising of the sun that illuminates the peaks of the rocks and the balloons. Giulio was lucky enough to be higher up compared to other balloons, and I was able to isolate one, perfectly illuminated.

3. LAKE BOGORIA (KENYA)

Location: Kenya

 

Siena International Photography Awards Description: Lake Bogoria is a saline water shallow located in the northern region of the Kenyan Rift, and known as the most beautiful view in Africa. The lake is a superb scenery of hills populated by dry bushes, grasslands and riverine forests, framing the calm water populated by millions of flamingoes.

4. COMING TO GET SALT

Location: Lake Asale, Ethiopia

 

Siena International Photography Awards Description: The Danakil Depression area is among the hottest and most inhospitable places on earth. It is also one of the lowest and the Lake Asale is at 116 metres below sea level. The Afar people are extracting salt here, using camels for transport.

5. BEEHIVE

Location: Sellin, Rugene Island (Germany)


Siena International Photography Awards Description: The peculiarity of the cabins and umbrellas portrait in this photo are used throughout northern Europe. Their position on the white sand, their unique orientation, people coming in and out of these "cells", recall bees and their hive.

6. SUNRISE AT GREAT WALL

Location: Simatai, Hebei Province (China)


Siena International Photography Awards Description: The point where Joseph was standing is the hardest part of Great Wall to reach without using special climbing gear. This image captures the Wall's awe inspiring beauty as it breaks through the triviality of humanity and rises for the birth of another day in its unparalleled history. It's timeless magnificence is a true celebration of mankind and a reflection of the rising dragon that is China and its place in the world order.

7. ON THE RIVER

Author: Vladimir Proshin (RU)
Location: Lishui (China)


Siena International Photography Awards Description: Chinese fishermen while they are fishing on a river close to the city of Lishui. The image was taken in 2013 during a photo tour when the author was invited by the "15th China International Photographic Art Exhibition" under the patronage of FIAP and the Chinese Photographic Organisation and where he was also awarded with the gold medal.

8. CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER

Location: Shwamibagh, Dhaka (Bangladesh)


Siena International Photography Awards Description: People from Hindu Community celebrating a three- day long ritual called "Rakher Upabas" at Loknath Temple at Barodi. Devotees offer prayers after lighting earthen lamps and they observe fasting until the lamps are burned out.

9. DESCENT TO RIVENDELL

Location: Alta Savoia (France)


Siena International Photography Awards Description: During a violent thunderstorm in the valley of High Savoy set inside the Grand Massif, Enrico found refuge inside a big cave in the mountain. From the inside of the cave he had the chance to capture and admire a dangerous and fascinating summer storm. The quick movement of the clouds gave him only few chances to capture the scene in good conditions, than the clouds descended downing the curtain. The title was inspired to an artwork by the illustrator John Howe.

10. BRAVING THE STORM

Author: Joseph Tam (AU)
Location: Dianbai, Guangdong Province (China)


Siena International Photography Awards Description: This shot was taken from a water-front fishing village. The fisherman rowing the timber boat is a courier who brings the catches from fishing boats to shore regularly. The swirling threat of the storm clouds and thunderous clamour of the angry waves sends a foreboding message to most.

MORE ABOUT THE SIENA INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS:

The contest, sponsored by the City of Siena and the University of Siena, and hosted by The Cultural Association Art Photo Travel, drew over 15,000 photos entries from over 100 countries!

The winning works are on display through 11.30.15 at the Beyond the Lens on exhibition in various venues throughout the city of Siena.
