THESE WAVES ROCK!
LLOYD MEUDELL
It takes a certain kind of genius to make an ocean look like rock. Photographer Lloyd Meudell is an ocean rock star.
An important key to Meudell’s magic is the early morning lighting he works. He has a daily routine, checking out the waves at the crack of dawn.
There’s a surreal quality to Meudell’s photo’s. It’s no surprise that Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte were his creative heroes.
The equipment is critical. Meudell shoots with the Elite 5D3 Water Housing for the Canon 5DMKIII. He tends to use longer zoom lenses, like the 70-200mm f/2.8 II IS L, the P-215 Lens Port, and zoom gear.
Time appears to be frozen. Yet timing is so serendipitous. The timing has to be just right, to align the tides, the swell, the wind, and the light to make the waves look like monumental mountains.
Growing up in the small coastal town of Kiama, Australia, Meudell knows the ocean well. He was an avid surfer before he started taking photos.
Meudell was inspired to pursue wave photography by Clark Little's Hawaii shore break images.
“I love the raw and unique beauty the sea provides and after spending the majority of my life in it surfing, I decided to start capturing what I saw in the camera.
Most of Meudell’s photographs are taken near where he lives on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia, where he delights in a diverse range of different waves.
Beyond his wave photography, Meudell works as a painter and decorator. See and learn more about Meudell’s work on his site and Instagram page.
