NEW YORK CITY IS DOUBLE BEAUTIFUL NOW
DARLENE OLLERENSHAW
New York City-based photographer Darlene Ollerenshaw has captured double beauty in the pulse of the Big Apple, with streetscapes reflected, as twinned images, in puddles after the rain.
Ollerenshaw’s unique diagonal tilt of the camera and low, barely-off-the-ground shooting angle open up a world of unique viewpoints that an urban pedestrian wouldn’t normally consider.
These double images ask us to consider at least one alternative to what we see as reality, if not the distinct possibility of many parallel worlds.
Ollerenshaw’s shot framing is boldly inventive. Her background as a CGI specialist of more than 20 years lends a vibrant, almost electric flair to these mirrored images.
Dreary, everyday street scenes are transformed into an abstract realm, where everything is bustling and cinematic, alive and exciting, full of double possibilities.
Sometimes the reflection is perfectly vivid. Sometimes it is blurred and rippled. Often times, the reflection reveals more than the original itself.
Ollerenshaw’s doubly beautiful cityscapes make us question whether what we see is only the beginning of the story.
