THE WILD BEAUTY OF FOXES NOW
Wild life has wild beauty at its essence. Each life form and each landscape has it’s own repertoire of magnificence.
Russian photographer Ivan Kislov specializes in wild fox beauty.
In particular, Kislov focuses on the foxes of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, a frozen wasteland that occupies part of Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula. It stretches east towards Alaska, forming the Bering Strait. The north Pacific & Arctic Oceans swirl together, washing its shores.
The peninsula's eastern tip, Cape Dezhnev, is the easternmost point of mainland Russia.
Wild foxes, with their thick fur, have figured out a way to thrive in each of the 3 local topographies: the northern Arctic desert, the central tundra, and the taiga in the south.
About half of this wild territory is above the Arctic Circle. Beyond the brutal cold, the foxes grapple with the mountainous topography of the Chukotsky Mountains and the Anadyr Range. Kamchatka Krai and Magadan Oblast lie to the north, with the Sakha Republic to the west.
Kislov is a mining engineer in Chukotka. He works long shifts. He finds beauty during his breaks, when he ventures out to commune with the foxes.
For most of the year, the snowy white landscape offers a stark contrast to the foxes’ bright red furry bodies. In warmer months, cubs, aka kits, tussle & tumble.
Naturally curious, and unafraid of humans, the foxes are perfectly happy to come close to Kislov, giving him incredible opportunity to capture their glory.
While Kislov knows where to find them, there aren’t many foxes around. They are listed as an endangered species.
