GET LOST IN A BEAUTIFUL CORN MAZE NOW!
With more than 50 million acres (200,000 km2) dedicated to growing corn in the US, we might as well have some fun with it. Take a drive to corn country this autumn to experience some very cool corn mazes.
The first modern corn maze was cut in 1993 by the American Maze Company at the Lebanon Valley College, in Pennsylvania. Now, quite a few farms offer them. They range from traditional labyrinths to navigable works of art. We’ve shared a few of our favorites with you below.
TREINEN FARM -- LODI, WISCONSIN
Check out the spectacular Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch at the Treinen Farm. This 200-acre farm has been in the Treinen family for nearly a century. The corn maze covers 15 acres, so you can really get lost here (in a good way)!
Beyond corn and pumpkins, Treinen grows hay and soybeans. They also breed and train Belgian draft horses.
Angie (Lathrop) Treinen the corn maze designer. She likes to include multiple layers of meaning within the corn mazes, often with an image that is fairly easily recognizable, such as Da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man.”
MEUER FARM -- CHILTON, WISCONSIN
The corn mazes at Meuer Farm, in Chilton Wisconsin, almost look like circuit boards from above. This 150-year old family farm works with sustainable crop growing methods. Beyond corn, they grow soybeans, alfalfa, oats, durum, emmer, spelt, strawberries, sugar-snap peas, and squash.
The woods “in the back 40” shelter maple trees tapped for maple syrup and black walnut trees that offer organic nuts.
RICHARDSON FARM -- SPRING GROVE, ILLINOIS
The Richardson Farm has been family owned since the 1800's. Originally pig farmers, the family now goes full tilt into corn mazes!
Check out their 11-mile corny labyrinth for a day full of fun this autumn!
NATHAN HALE HOMESTEAD CORN MAZE -- COVENTRY, CONNECTICUT
The corn maze at Nathan Hale Homestead, in Coventry, Connecticut, is vast and lush. It is surrounded by trees that really rock autumn’s color. And, on some nights… the maze is Haunted! So bring your flashlight and your bravery!
MIKE’S MAZE AT WARNER FARM -- SUNDERLAND, MASSACHUSETTS
Mike’s Maze is a fabulous 8-acre corn maze at Warner Farm, one of the oldest and longest running family farms in New England. Each year, we are treated to another super-creative installation. Often, they are cornfield portraits and have include the likenesses of Salvador Dali, Charles Darwin, the Mona Lisa, among others.
The farm, in Sunderland, Massachusetts, has been operating for 10 generations, since the 1720’s. Today, father and son Mike and David Wissemann continue that legacy by sustainably growing a wide range of crops on 150 acres of fertile river valley soil.
PAPROSKI’S CASTLE HILL FARM CORN MAZE -- NEWTON, CONNECTICUT
Paproski’s Castle Hill Farm Corn Maze is a joy. The family owned farm offers a completely different and unique maze design each year. They provide maps that lead you through and point to 30 signs along the way with themed fun facts. Check out their pumpkin patch and hayrides too.
LYMAN ORCHARDS -- MIDDLEFIELD, CONNECTICUT
Lyman Orchards, in Middlefield, Connecticut, established in 1741, is celebrating its 275th anniversary this year, so it’s a great time to visit their awesome corn maze.
Set within its 1,100 acres in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley, Lyman’s corn mazes are a trip!
You can also pick-your-own fruits, with over 100 varieties to choose from. And sample locally sourced foods, handmade pies and other goodies. Check out their 3 award-winning golf courses too.
TREWORGY ORCHARDS -- LEVANT, MAINE
The corn maze Treworgy Orchards, in Levant, Maine, is always designed with whimsy. This family farm is so picturesque, especially in autumn.
While you’re there, check out their beautiful Cortland or McIntosh apples and pick gorgeous pumpkins from their five-acre patch.
