THIS LIGHT MAKES US LOOK MORE BEAUTIFUL
PLUMEN 003
A light bulb that makes you look more beautiful? Brilliant!
You know how candlelight makes everyone look more beautiful? It’s all about the mellow golden glow that it casts, softening little flaws, smoothing skin to warm velvet, lovingly sculpting nearby faces, rendering them as would Dutch Masters.
The Plumen 003 is a light bulb that offers an innovative way to distribute golden light. And it uses real gold to do it! This is a unique hybrid lamp that combines the functional benefits of a spotlight with the warm, flattering omnidirectional golden glow of candlelight.
Designed by Hulger, Claire Norcross and Marie-Laure Giroux, the 003 took 5 years to develop. It was time well spent -- the bulb takes beauty even further -- it is a super-efficient LED -- each golden light lasts at least 10,000 hours.
Golden light makes practically everything else look more beautiful too. That’s why landscape photographers and painters love when the sun streams in almost sideways at the end of the afternoon, washing the scene in gold.
The Plumen 003 does the same to interior landscapes, from tablescapes to roomscapes. It’s perfect to be hung over a dining table, bar, or nightstand, anywhere a candle might be summoned to cast you in the best light. And it’s dimmable.
Five years in the making, the Plumen 003 is designed to be two lights in one. A downward spotlight serves to illuminate a book, a plate or a focal point. The clever bulb also has a faceted gold shade on the inside which sweetly scatters ambient glow. This bulb delivers both practical and mood lighting elegantly.
Plumen’s quest for beauty didn't stop with the physical appearance of the bulb. The designers also needed to consider how it would interact with and improve its surroundings. That’s why it isn't only beautiful to look at: it makes you look more beautiful, too.
The 003 design was inspired by Danish designer Poul Henningsen's PH lamp, created in 1925. Just as the PH aimed to transition between the two lighting technologies of the time: kerosene oil lamps and incandescent electrical bulbs, Plumen aimed to successfully replace incandescent bulbs with LED lights. Plumen 003s consume 80% less energy than standard incandescent bulb.
Based in London, Plumen debuted in 2010. Its founding mission was to create beauty with design for efficient lighting (LEDs and CFLs), seducing people to upgrade their low efficiency lighting (incandescent) with high efficiency LED bulbs.
Plumen’s first creation is the Plumen 001, which we covered in our London Design Show survey, was known as “The World’s First Designer Low Energy Light Bulb.”
