10 EXTRAORDINARY LIGHTING DESIGNS TO DELIGHT YOU NOW

Root System.

1. BOCCI 28

This is but one of many incredibly beautiful lights created by Bocci, a Canadian design and manufacturing company founded by creative director Omer Arbel. Each globe of hand-blown glass is made when air is intermittently blown in and then sucked out of an intermittently heated and then cooled glass matrix. The result is a beautiful spherical shape with a highly-reflective, translucent interior.

The 28.7 features seven globe pendants made in clear, white and frosted glass. The pendants are designed to cluster in hexagonal shapes which nestle into each other and can be expanded to fit any interior.

Arbel recently hung 280 handmade globes to fill a vertical space of more than 90 feet in the main hall of the Victoria and Albert museum in London for a spectacular display.

Arbel and his team constantly experiments with materials and manufacturing techniques to create truly unique forms, shapes, textures and effects. Architects and interior designers love the way Bocci pieces not only create light but play with it amidst their spaces.

2. BOCCI 38

Each Bocci lighting series is named after the chronological number of its design debut.

The Bocci 38 pendant is comprised of a spherical translucent outer shell, with 10 opaque white pockets inside. The 38 can be fitted with hanging plants, as it was this past year for the Chelsea Flower Show in London.

3. BOCCI 57

The Bocci 57 chandelier is made through a special glass-blowing technique called hot sculpting.

During this process, molten glass is gathered from a furnace, and sculpted into its unique shape using pincers and a blow hose.

Bocci hung a massive beautiful tangle of 57 series pendants straight down through the center of Mallet’s Ely House headquarters in London during this year’s London Design Festival. Read more about it in our post New Beautiful Juxtapositions in London.

4. ROOT SYSTEM  -- MICHELE OKA DONER

American artist Michele Oka Doner’s love of spirituality in the natural world fuels each of her gorgeous lighting designs. Her work is currently on exhibition at Christie’s in New York, as part of a 50-year retrospective entitled The Shaman’s Hut - 50 Years of Objects from a Ceremonial Life.

Root System is a light sculpture, made of roots cast in bronze. It spans 55 square feet. The artist has been called “nature’s scribe” as she uses organic forms, like bark, tree roots, microscopic molecules, and the human body, to inspire her designs.

5. BURNING BUSH -- MICHELE OKA DONER

Burning Bush is a natural candelabra, part of an ongoing series, which uses the fallen limbs of a willow tree as its armature.

Oka Doner’s work is in collections worldwide, notably the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cooper-Hewitt, La Musée Des Artes Décoratifs, and the Louvre, among others.

6. NYMPH LAMPS -- VAINIUS KUBILIUS

Vainius Kubilius’ gorgeously crafted Nymphs Lamps have transformed pendant lamp designs. These lamps combine elements of traditional candle light and wall art to create a dreamy atmosphere in any room.

The lamp heads are crafted from coconut shells with 1,000 tiny perforations which let the light through, creating beautiful lacy patterns on the surrounding space.

7. MAMMATUS -- CHRISTOPHER MOULDER

Mammatus is a gorgeous light sculpture that shines in the Arrivals Hall at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. Designer Christopher Moulder was inspired by the formation of low-hanging mammatocumulous clouds.

Mammatus was designed in the computer graphics program RHINO 3D, using Grasshopper parametric modeling software. It is grounded in the physics of catenary curves. These shapes are emulated throughout the world in hanging power lines, suspension bridges, and spider webs.

Made with over 8 miles of nickel-plated bead chain, the 8′ H x 24′ W x 42′ L sculpture weighs almost 3,000 pounds. It is lit with 30 color-kinetic RGB LED light luminaries. They are programed to change color according to the date and time of day.

8. FRACTAL MIST -- CHRISTOPHER MOULDER

This hand-tied fiberglass sculpture is another gem from Christopher Moulder. Fractal Mist was created by painstakingly weaving strands of RBG LED’s.

9. BOOO PENDANTS

Booo Design Lamps is reinventing the pendant light in a trendy, eco-friendly way. Conventional bulbs have been replaced with LEDs and are crafted out of rubber, giving off an elegant, even glow to your room.

They have partnered with Italian design duo Formafantasma to create this particular pendant light design. The distinctive shape of these lights is reminiscent of two asymmetrical leaves, through which the soft light is emitted through. Use it as a single piece or as one of many in a forest of lit leaves.

10. ETHER S 150 -- PATRICK JOUIN

The Ether S 150 Drop Chandelier is truly a sight to behold. The clear Murano glass bubbles, suspended from the polished chrome ceiling plate, evoke giant rain drops falling from the sky. Four spotlights shine through the glass bubbles, letting a warm light flood the room.

This beauty was designed by Patrick Jouin for Murano Due.
