INCREDIBLE SHINE FASHION FANTASIES NOW

ATTON CONRAD

Atton Conrad O’Murchadha’s fashion designs shine like no other. That’s because his “clothing” isn’t made of fabric and needs no draping or sewing. The amazing dresses Conrad creates are made purely of light.

Conrad, an accomplished fine art and commercial photographer, paints with light to create his images here. His “paintbrush” is a light wand, which he “paints” around the model, while he uses a remote trigger to snap the shot.

Conrad is known for his cutting edge art and fashion photography. You may recognize some of these Painted Light dresses from ad campaigns that he shot for Belvedere Vodka and Moet Hennessy.

In photographing a story for 125 Magazine, entitled “Futures Light,” Conrad first developed the concept and technique for light painted dresses.

“It started with light trails, but grew far beyond that. As I developed my methodology and custom designed ‘light brushes,’ I realised that the techniques could give me incredibly fine control over light and texture, to an unique almost hyperreal result.”

Conrad describes his process as an intensely visceral one. It is physical as well, as he not only “paints,” but also “dances” around his models with the light “brushes.”

But it’s not just about technique. "Concept without technique is lame. Technique without concept is blind,” says Conrad.

“I love technology, I have used photoshop for over a decade, but there is a certain quality I want to create that is unobtainable by that route alone. One can only create unique results created via a unique methodology.”

Not one to be hemmed in by medium, Conrad is also experimenting in creating beautiful new kinds of shine with water vs light. The result is stunning in its own way.
