From the Arctic Circle to an African savannah, from an alpine mountain top to a lowland salt flat, from a jungle to a tundra, there’s a wonderful lodge, tent, bungalow or igloo that is waiting to welcome you. Some are luxurious quarters in their own right, and some are more simple, focusing solely on the luxury of your surroundings.

Hotel Arctic. Ilulissat, Greenland.

The four-star Hotel Arctic sits at the edge of Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy your stay in a contemporary igloo, which serves as your home base for an thrilling Arctic adventure.

Marvel at the nearby mammoth Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. Ogle the Northern Lights. Visit the whales in summer. Dog-sled in winter. And get to know the indigenous Inuit and their beautiful culture.

Palacio de Sal hotel overlooks the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, which stretches 4,086 square miles across southwestern Bolivia, at an elevation of 11,995 feet. It is a remarkable surreal landscape of crystallized salt, with a smooth mirror-like surfaces, punctuated by cacti and fossilized algae.

The hotel is built from over 1 million solid blocks of salt, quarried from the surrounding salt flats. Even the furniture is made of salt!

Set out on an adventure exploring the flats in off-road vehicles. You will find some amazing sites that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth.

Pacuare Lodge. Pacuare River, Costa Rica.

Watch for jaguars and sloths from your own private bungalow at Pacuare Lodge, a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World, is set deep in the Costa Rica rainforest. Your home base is a private bungalow. Your adventure will take you through jungle lands via four-wheel drive vehicle and white water raft. You’ll be treated to awesome waterfalls, thrilling rapids, and glorious hikes.

Pacuare Lodge is eco-friendly, with minimal impact on the environment. It assists scientists who are in the area to study the local jaguars and howler monkey, both of which you are likely to catch sight of.

Norden Camp. Tibetan Autonomous Kanlho Prefecture, Gansu province, China.

Sleep in a yak hair tent at Norden Camp, in Tibet, to experience traditional Tibetan life, right alongside Tibetan nomads who are there to graze their herds in the surrounding fields.

Your adventure will be immersed in nature as you ride Tibetan horses across the plateau, in search of endemic birds. You will also experience local culture, visiting the ancient Buddhist Labrang Monastery and dining upon yak milk, hand-pulled noodles, and flatbread baked in mud-brick ovens.

It isn’t easy to get to Denali Backcountry Lodge, set deep in the wilderness of Denali National Park, but it’s worth it. It’s best to get there via Alaskan bush plane.

Set off on your Alaskan adventure on one of lodge’s mountain bikes or hike across dozens of gorgeous rugged trails. You’ll see grizzly bears, wolves, and herds of long-horned Dall sheep as you navigate the alpine tundra and boreal forest. If you’re feeling lucky, pan for gold in Moose Creek. But either way, you are lucky just to be in this magnificent place.

Camp out in the eco-friendly geodesic domes of Whitepod Hotel, perched on Dents du Midi mountain in the Swiss Chablais Alps.

You can ski, snowscoot, or snowshoe right out onto the resort’s own ski slopes in winter. In summer, your adventure can include paragliding tours as well as dog-kart and dog-scooter expeditions through the forest.

The posh Ngorongoro Crater Lodge sits on the edge of an expansive volcanic crater in the heart of Tanzania. From its vista, gaze out across the Ngorogoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can spot the full range of African wildlife, including the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros, and Cape buffalo as they go about their wild business in the savanna.

If you go just after rainy season, a shallow lake fills the crater, attracting thousands of pink flamingos as they migrate through the Rift Valley. You can see even more birds on a guided bird hike down into Crater.

For extra thrill, hang out with the friendly Hadzabe bushmen to get a taste of their traditional life here in one of the most beautiful wild places on the planet.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort. Kakslauttanen, Finland.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is planted in the remote icy landscape of northern Finland. It is the perfect place to launch an Arctic adventure.

Watch the northern lights dance across the skies above as you look up through the roof of your private glass igloo. When you’re ready for some winter action, take a reindeer safari through the snow-draped forest or cruise across the frozen Bay of Bothnia in an icebreaker boat. In the summer saddle up a horse and trek through the trails of Urho Kekkonen National Park.

Either way, chill out after your adventures in traditional Finnish smoke saunas alternating with a plunge into icy waters -- that’s what the locals do!
