2017 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL BN PICKS: STORIES WITH A BEAUTIFUL SENSE OF PLACE & TIME

High in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, the 2017 Sundance Film Festival is underway and we are there. Today, we are sharing some of our favorite most beautiful film picks. Check them out below.

1. RED DOG: TRUE BLUE

Legend has it that a unique red dog wandered the Australian outback in the 1970s touching the hearts of those who needed touching.

RED DOG: True Blue, a new film directed by Kriv Stenders, tells the story of a young boy whose sad life was transformed by Red Dog after his father died and his mother was committed to a mental hospital.

Featuring beautiful cinematography and soulful performances, RED DOG: True Blue is gorgeous coming-of-age story.

2. WALKING OUT

Revel in the beauty of Big Sky country as 14-year old David and his father Cal trapse across the Montana wilderness on the boy’s first big game hunt, in Walking Out, co-writtern and directed by Alex and Andrew Smith.

When Cal is wounded by a grizzly bear, he must rely upon David’s strength and resilience to survive. Father and son develop a new sense of love and respect for each other along the way.

3. RANCHER, FARMER, FISHERMAN

A Montana rancher fends off commercial development, trying to preserve his neighboring wilderness. A Kansas farmer implements controversial new practices to combat soil degradation and erosion. And Louisiana a commercial fisherman partners with regulators to help sustain red snapper populations. All 3 atypical conservation heroes help fight the good fight in Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman, a new film directed by Susan Froemke, John Hoffman, and Beth Aala.

Based on New York Times best-selling author Miriam Horn's recent book of the same name, shows how the voices of heartland conservationists are helping to safeguard our natural resources.

4. COLUMBUS

Modern architecture, with its clean lines and spare forms, charm some and mystify others. In Columbus, a beautifully shot debut film directed by Kogonada, Jin falls into the latter camp.

Jin finds himself immersed in an unusual Midwestern city renowned for its modernist buildings, nevertheless, while his father lies in a coma. But his new librarian friend Casey shows him the merits. His newfound appreciation gives him a new perspective on life, space, and human interactions.

5. TOKYO IDOLS

Tokyo Idols, a new film directed by Kyoko Miyake, looks into the Japanese pop music industry and its focus on traditional beauty ideals. As young girl bands seduce crowds of men with their borderline-child-pornesque sticky style, they point to the growing disconnect between men and women in hypermodern societies.
