Color Mob 5K:
Brooklyn, New York
July 13, 2013
Get lost in a cloud of colors! The Color Mob 5K is a race and a party rolled into one. Runners are encouraged to deck themselves in all white, becoming blank canvases for the blitzkrieg of vibrant multi-colored powdered pigments that rain on them throughout the race. The festivities don’t stop when you cross the finish line. Check out our post, Atmosphere, Color & Air, about the somewhat similar Indian Holi festival which took place earlier this year.
Color Mob 5K has several runs planned for 2013, but this weekend they’re taking over Brooklyn. The race begins Saturday July 13th at 1:00pm. Sign up here.

Sketchbook Project:
Chicago, USA
July 12 - 14, 2013
The Sketchbook Project is a global, crowdsourced art project and interactive, traveling exhibition of handmade books. Anyone can join. Simply sign up, get a moleskin notebook, fill it up with artwork, photos, and writing, and send it back.
Since 2006, the sketchbooks have evolved to a library that features more than 27,000 notebooks from over 130 countries around the world. Those notebooks are marked with a barcode and organized in a mobile library that tours the country. The barcodes monitor the location of each notebook and even sends a notification to the artist each time the sketchbooks are pursued.

The mobile library will stop in Chicago this weekend on July 12th at the Chicago Arts District Second Friday (from 6:00pm to 10:00pm) and July 13 - 14 at the Hyde Park Art Center (from noon to 5:00pm). From there, the Sketchbook Project will make stops this summer in Portland, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, LA, Kansas City, St. Louis, Baltimore, and more. Check out their events listing for the full tour schedule.

Fête Paradiso
Governor’s Island, New York
July 13 - September 29, 2013
Start by heading to the very southern tip of Manhattan. From there, take a ferry into the 19th century. Fête Paradiso is the world’s first traveling festival of vintage carnival rides, games, and carousels. Check out these rare, museum quality pieces, take some painted ponies, for a ride, and have a blast being an old-fashioned kid.

One of the jewels in the Fête Paradiso collection will be a bicycle carousel from the late 19th century- one of only two in the world to exist (the other can be seen in our beloved “Midnight in Paris”). A bumper car pavillion (turned beer garden) from 1900 will also be set up on Governor’s Island. Traditional French carnival food will be served and period music will be played live to enhance the nostalgia trip.

Fête Paradiso’s opening day, July 13th, the eve of Bastille Day, fittingly, features a Parisian Ball that promises to be a fairytale party, with a soundtrack provided by “masters of the French underground.”
Fête Paradiso is a free event. Buy tickets to the Parisian Ball here.
