EDGES OF THE SKY ON EDGE NOW

French photographer Romain Jacquet-Lagrèz looks at horizons differently. He looks up. And for him, the edge of the sky takes on a whole new form and meaning.

His series, “Vertical Horizons,” documents Hong Kong’s urban sprawl as it encroaches upon the sky.

With a population of seven million squeezed into an area of just 426 square-miles, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. To accommodate them all, urban planners have built upwards, dramatically altering the experience of horizon lines.

While these photos have a foreboding message about humans overbuilding their worlds, as nature gets blocked out by manmade structures, the patterns and textures that take shape have a new kind of beauty.

Jacquet-Lagrèz has lived in Kowloon for six years. He particularly likes to photograph the vertical horizon edges of the Kwai Tsing and Western districts of the city.
