10 GORGEOUS DESIGN FINDS AT LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL 2015
We’ve gathered furniture and lighting designs we loved at the London Design Festival 2015. Here are some of our favorite finds.
1. POLTRONA FRAU SOFA
Italian furniture-maker Poltrona Frau opened its first UK showroom during LDF. Founded in 1912, by Sardinian-born Renzo Frau, then specializing in leather seating and interiors for cars, Poltrona Frau acquired a collection of notable design brands, including Cappellini.
Poltrona Frau’s Grantorino sofa is a stellar piece of leather art, designed by Jean-Marie Massaud. We’re thinking it would be perfect in our living room!
2. POLTRONA FRAU VOLARE BED
Roberto Lazzeroni’s four-poster bed, designed for Poltrona Frau, is sumptuous, with its combinations of leather, hide, wood and fabric. The bed appears to float on air, as it is supported by a single central leg.
The footboard and bed frame boards are made of tulipwood and entirely upholstered in Cuoio Saddle Extra leather or Pelle Frau® leather, as is the beech and birch plywood headboard. It was presented at Focus 15 at LDF.
3. MOOOI
Of course we are already partial to design brand named Moooi -- not only is it fun to say, it means “beautiful” in Dutch!
Founded in 2001 by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers, the Moooi portfolio includes works by nationally and internationally recognized designers, including Wanders, Jurgen Bey, Bertjan Pot, Maarten Baas, Jaime Hayon, Neri & Hu, Joost van Bleiswijk, Studio Job and Nika Zupanc.
During London Design Festival, Moooi presented inspirational living sets incorporating their latest designs at their new location, overlooking the Thames. We especially loved Miyake’s Coppelia Lamps suspended above it all.
4. JAM SPACE
Jam Space is a limited edition design furniture and accessories store that launched a collection of furniture, wallpapers, lighting, and accessories inspired by both ancient and contemporary Egypt. We love their Noor Lighting Collection. Translucent lozenges of color form the centers of the bases, looking a bit like an inspired genie in a bottle.
5. OWEN JOHNSON
Glass designer Owen Johnson combines Venetian Murrini glass technique with glass fusing and casting, employing textile inspired patterns. Johnson, a PhD Student at the Royal College of Art, is one of Mint’s Twisting Traditions showcase talents who put contemporary spins on traditional processes and designs.
6. CZECH GLASS CHAMPIONS
Czech Glass Champions showcased the very best contemporary glass design at LDF’s Tent London. The artisan Czech beer on offer made the glasses even more beautiful.
7. LEE BROOM
Lee Broom, one of the UK’s leading product & interior designers, presented his new collection of vases and accessories at LDF with an immersive floral display, entitled Flower Shop.
Broom’s Podium Vase Collection was launched at London Design Festival. Each of the three glass vessel shapes, globe, bowl and cylinder, is interchangeable between the round Carrara marble and square Marquina marble bases, so you can mix things up beautifully.
8. HEM - LUCA NICHETTO
Luca Nichetto’s modular Alphabeta lamps for Hem look like they are ready to play. But they are serious design stars. These configurable pendant lamps continually form new realities.
Hem displayed 44 variations of the lamp, suspended above a piano at LDF. Each was illuminated by striking the corresponding keys of a piano in the center of the room.
9. THE DRAWING ROOM -- FAYE TOOGOOD
Designer Faye Toogood reimagined an English drawing room at LDF. If one can imagine a pleasant experience of abandonment, The Drawing Room exhibition would deliver. Partially finished and partially derelict, Toogood turns the vision into surprising bliss.
10. PATTERNITY -- PAPERLESS POST
Founded in 2009 by “cult pattern pioneers” photographer/art director Anna Murray and surface/product designer Grace Winteringham, PATTERNITY is an award-winning design and creative studio. Paperless Post is a digital invitations company.
Together, they designed, “Connected by Pattern,” an interactive 3-D installation at LDF at Somerset House that is ready to party.
