THE KINETIC ART & DESIGN OF TIME NOW
THE GREEN ROOM -- GLITHERO
Time is movement. Movement is time. Fine watchmakers and clockmakers turn this reciprocal definition into an artform.
London design studio Glithero has blown this concept out with a incredibly beautiful kinetic installation that spans 6 floors at the Victoria & Albert Museum as part of the London Design Festival 2016.
Titled “The Green Room,” this monumental work is essentially "abstract clock" made up of a series of bright neon-hued silicone cords that are attached to a motorized revolving arm operating at the top of the tall stairwell.
As the arm moves at 1 revolution per minute, the strings undulate, creating a wave-like motion, dancing through time.
Glithero, founded by English designer Tim Simpson & Dutch designer Sarah van Gameren, is known for installations and works that focus on process which develops over time. Time is a central theme.
The installation is located inside a historic stairwell, which features moss green walls and large, round windows that let in shafts of natural light. You can climb to the top so you can enjoy a range of perspectives.
The piece is called The Green Room because the historic stairwell that surrounds the installation is predominantly green. It also refers to a surfer term for the barrel of a wave.
The Green Room was created in partnership with Italian watch brand Panerai. It is on view at the V&A as part of the London Design Festival through 09. 25.16.
