THE BEAUTIFUL MOTIONS OF EXPLOSIONS NOW

All paintings and photos capture a moment, when motion is stopped --- frozen in space and time. But check these out... they’ll blow you away!

The line between art project and science experiment is beautifully blurred in German photographer Martin Klimas’ work. His photos stop the beautiful motions of explosions.

In a recent series entitled Rapid Bloom, Klimas captures the movements of flower fragments as they are shattered by air guns.  

Klimas began by dipping flowers into liquid nitrogen, giving them a brittle eggshell - like quality. He then captured the exact moment when the air “bullets” hit, exploding the delicate petals, propelling their gossamer shards outward.

In another Klimas series, the flowers remain intact while Klimas fires steel balls at their vases before taking his shots -- Ceramics and glass burst into smithereens and are frozen in space and time.

Klimas finds joy in capturing invisible scientific forces, or moments that pass too quickly to be seen by the naked eye. 

Klimas explains, “My images deliver these explanations by making the processes visible - the chaos and the unknown turn into order and knowledge.”

He has developed innovations in both process and equipment which help to make his pictures of motion extraordinary. He linked audio sensors to his camera which, when activated by his explosions, transmit a signal to trigger a shot.

We love the bursts of color, the paths of bits that used to be part of a whole as they are released from their current form to form another. Klimas moves us every time.
