NEW PERSPECTIVES REVEAL BEAUTIFUL NEW PATTERNS

JUAN GENOVÉS

Award-winning artist Juan Genovés sees beauty on high. His lofty perspective reveals beautiful patterns otherwise undetectable from the ground.

As one of Spain’s most important modern painters, Genovés was part of several important movements in the post war Spanish art scene: Los Siete (The Seven) 1949, Parpallós (1956) and Hondo (1960).

He eventually moved towards a new approach to figurative painting, in opposition to Informalism, developing a style of painting that was expressionist and provocative.

Genovés began to focus on both the "individual," which he represented through collage, and "the crowd," a formation of patterns, which he painted in flat colors, in a broad sweeping cinematographic style.

Genovés pushed his work into the realm of political realism, adding a human perspective to the landscapes. He began to focus on the urban landscape, reducing it to a chromatic range of greys, blues and ochres to make up "spaces of loneliness.”

More recently, Genovés has explored the static movement in painting, creating visual rhythm of patterns as his aerial points of view paint a story about the people on the ground below.

Genovés trained at the Valencia Art College. He is represented by the Marlborough Gallery, in New York.
