BEAUTIFUL FOOLS ON WALLS NOW
1010
You can walk through walls! That’s what the artist known as 1010 fools us into believing. And he does it beautifully with his enigmatic murals.
Part Op Art, part trompe l’oeil, 1010 paints abstractly shaped “holes” onto the exterior and interior walls of buildings.
Originally from Poland, 1010 moved to Germany when he was 8 years old. Early on, he began spray painting graffiti. His urban art evolved to develop his signature illusory style.
Creating foolery is, in and of itself, its own art. And usually, it requires a finely crafted process.
For 1010, the process begins with creating an amorphous dark shape on a wall, usually influenced by the building’s architectural design. He then works outwardly, expanding the shape, ripple by ripple, lightening the colors as he goes, with the lightest shades at the periphery of the “hole.”
Mastering the art and science of color and perspective perception, 1010’s brightly ringed shapes fool us, leading us to imaginary worlds beyond.
When complete, the “holes” feel like portals, inviting the viewer to pass from one space through to the next…. Or perhaps into infinity.
Recently, in Paris, 1010 created his largest illusion to date. Measuring 4500 square meters, it is located on the ground on a closed section of highway. It took him 7 days to apply the more than 400 liters (105.6 gallons) of paint used in this work.
At the other end of the spectrum, 1010 also creates his visual trickery on a small scale, on hand-cut paper. In between, he produces works on canvas.
Exploring his interest in new materials and technologies, 1010’s new paintings are created on acrylic glass and aluminum dibond.
This past fall, as part of his new show, titled “Limbus,” 1010 posted an outdoor mural adjacent to San Francisco Bay, near the Hashimoto Contemporary Gallery, which housed the indoor part of his show.
