BEAUTIFUL MICROSCOPIC NATURE: THE NIKON PHOTOMICROGRAPHY CONTEST

Finding beauty in the invisible is an extraordinary surprise. Advances in imaging technology let us see the most incredible structures, colors, patterns, and textures in microscopic organisms.

Eye of a Honey Bee

The Nikon Photomicrography Contest is the world’s foremost showcase for photomicrography, with entries spanning a wide array of scientific disciplines.

Organisms are captured, at the cellular level, through advanced light microscopes.

The Contest, which debuted in 1975, attracts both professional and amateur photographers who photograph things impossible to see with the naked eye using a light microscope.

The Photomicrography Competition is open to anyone with an interest in microscopy and photography. The video competition, entitled Small World In Motion, encompasses any movie or digital time-lapse photography taken through the microscope.

International in scope, entries have been received from the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

These entries are judged, by an independent panel of experts, on the basis of originality, informational content, technical proficiency and visual impact.

The awe-inspiring images not only astonish us with their beauty and technical accomplishment, but they help us to better understand life itself.

Beyond the visual wonder and glory, we get a glimpse into “conversations” happening at the cellular level. We become privy to a whole new set of signals and responses. We watch miniscule biological “machines” at work. We learn new rationale.
