10 BEAUTIFUL BOOKS FEATURING THE BEAUTY OF GREY NOW
Grey is a most beautiful color. It’s not the one that typically enjoys “favorite color” status. In fact, many people would say it’s not a great color at all. This week, we will be featuring the extraordinary and surprising beauty of greys in each day’s Daily Fix.
We begin with the BN Team’s curated-for-beauty collection of the most magnificent new books featuring the beauty of grey. Check them out below.
1. GREY MATTER(S)
“Grey Matter(s),” by photographer Tom Jacobi, features more than 70 photographs of some of the most spectacular wonders of the natural world.
Most photos were captured early in the morning, when a reduced color palette, shifting to rich gorgeous greys, reveals them at their most powerful and sublime.
2. WILD ENCOUNTERS; ICONIC PHOTOGRAPHS OF WORLD’S VANISHING ANIMALS AND CULTURES
“Wild Encounters: Iconic Photographs of the World's Vanishing Animals and Cultures,” by award-winning photographer David Yarrow, is one of the most beautiful new books for nature lovers, conservationists, and anyone who can appreciate the beauty of the wild.
Featuring 160 of his most breathtaking photographs, Wild Encounters offers a truly intimate view of some of the world's most compelling—and threatened—species.
3. ULLA VON BRANDENBURG: IT HAS A GOLDEN YELLOW SUN AND AN ELDERLY GREY MOON
“Ulla Von Brandenburg: It Has a Golden Yellow Sun and an Elderly Grey Moon,” by artist Ulla von Brandenburg, is a hybrid monograph. The book borrows its title from the artist’s new film and reflects themes recurrent in her work, focusing on color, ritual, movement, and textiles.
4. THE GREY GHOST: NEW YORK CITY PHOTOGRAPHS
“The Grey Ghost: New York City Photographs,” by photographer Dan Winters, features nearly 100 black & white images, taken over the decades during his residency there.
While subjects include icons of New York City, such as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building, Winters’ captivating images invite us to look much more closely.
5. THE PIPESTONE WOLVES: THE RISE AND FALL OF A WOLF FAMILY
“The Pipestone Wolves: The Rise and Fall of a Wolf Family,” by Günther Bloch and photographer John E. Marriott, tells the story of a new grey wolf family from the Pipestone Valley that suddenly appeared in the Bow Valley of Banff National Park.
The new family took up residence alongside the Bow Valley wolf family that had ruled there for over a decade and, within a year, established a dominance that would last for 5 years in the heart of Canada’s most famous national park.
With an intimate look at animal behavior, along with the effects of human impacts, this book is food for thought as well as a feast for the eyes.
6. THE LOVINGS: AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT
“The Lovings: An Intimate Portrait,” by Barbara Villet & photographer Grey Villet, documents the extraordinary love story of Mildred and Richard Loving. Grey Villet's complete stunning black & white photo-essay tells the story of this interracial couple who defied racist laws and culture in the US and fought for their right to marry and love each other.
Loving v. Virginia was the landmark US civil rights case that, in a unanimous decision, ultimately ended the prohibition of interracial marriage in 1967. The story was also featured in a new film, “Loving.”
7. GREY SKIES, BLACK BIRDS
“Grey Skies, Black Birds by Stephanie Borcard,” by award-winning photographers Stephanie Borcard & Nicolas Metraux, explores the changing landscapes of Bosnia, 20 years after the end of the Bosnian War.
8. WOLF HAVEN: SANCTUARY AND THE FUTURE OF WOLVES IN NORTH AMERICA
“Wolf Haven: Sanctuary and the Future of Wolves in North America,” by Brenda Peterson & photographer Annie Marie Musselman, features many wolves that have been given sanctuary at Wolf Haven International near Mount Rainier in southeast Washington State.
These captive-born and displaced grey & red wolves will steal your heart. The images are breathtaking. The stories are powerful.
"Musselman's images of the haven embody the meditative patience she used to photograph it. They’re ethereal and lightweight, less like static pictures and more like breath—a glimpse of a being that you know is there but that you can’t predict or control."

9. EARLY EXPOSURES: A PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMOIR
“Early Exposures: A Photographic Memoir,” by photographer Bill Pennell, chronicles his travels to 5 extraordinarily beautiful parts of the world: Wales, Borneo, Mauritius, the interior of British Columbia, and the Canadian West Coast.
Pennell worked with both a large-format view camera and a Leica 35mm, to create richly detailed black & white images, embellishing each with colorful recollections.
10. LOVELY AFRICAN GREYS 2017: UNIQUE PHOTOS OF BEAUTIFUL GREY PARROTS CALENDAR
“Lovely African Greys 2017: Unique Photos of Beautiful Grey Parrots,” is a lovely calendar, featuring beautiful photos by Nadine Keller. See a new view of these gorgeous grey birds each month.
