ANCIENT STATUES BLOSSOM ANEW NOW
GEOFFROY MOTTART
Old statues spring to life when Geoffroy Mottart has his way with them. The French floral artist reimagines historical sculptures by styling them with beautifully arranged fresh flowers.
Stone and bronze busts and figures that have graced the public parks and gardens of Brussels for hundreds of years look oddly contemporary as their hair and beards sport colorful blossoms, leaves, and mosses.
Mottart got the idea for his “Fleurissements” series when he realized that most people passed by these beautiful statues without even noticing their existence.
Originally placed to commemorate heroes, both mortal and mythical, reminding Belgians of their cultural heritage, they were taken for granted and ignored.
“My job as a florist gives me the opportunity to restore a new life, a new breath of originality to these forgotten statues,” explains Mottart.
Mottart acts as a guerilla street artist, rather than by commission. He flower bombs his subjects in stealth mode. His works are ephemeral interventions, often lasting no more than a day or two. He photographs each so they can continue to be enjoyed.
Leopold II, Hermes, and the Goddess of Bocq are a few of the beneficiaries of the floral glory.
The bright botanica adds both elegance and whimsy, giving each monument a new persona.
“By putting a floral note in places or on objects, spectators pay attention to my work and rediscover what surrounds it,” Mottart explains.
