THE ART & DESIGN OF CREATING REALITY NOW AT SUNDANCE 2016

Virtual Reality began as a science experiment but quickly became an artist’s medium. Today, we are featuring arts related VR films and experiences that we particularly loved at Sundance Festival 2016. Check them out below.

STONEMILKER

The fabulous Björk is true to her avant garde self as she ventures into the world of live-action VR with Stonemilker. Experience the magical spot in Iceland that she calls “home” as she delivers one of her most visceral performances on her neighborhood beach. You will feel like you are there… and you might be compelled to book your flight soon so you can get the other kind of “real” experience firsthand.

FABULOUS WONDER.LAND

No need to go ask Alice -- you can check it out yourself! Explore the magical world of fabulous wonder.land, a new animated musical VR Experience, directed by Ollie Lindsey, Lysander Ashton, and Toby Coffey.

It’s based on a theatrical performance created by The Royal National Theatre.

Look up! there’s a Cheshire cat hovering above and he’s singing to you!

SURGE

Meditate on the evolutionary process of life in Surge, a new music-driven VR Experience, directed by Arjan van Meerten. This is like living in an animated music video. Meerten created all of the music, animation, and code himself. 

THE ABBOT’S BOOK

A deep, dark, gothic-inspired story about an Italian noble family grappling with an ancient curse embedded within a book buried in the catacombs beneath their estate.

Check out the beautiful animation and fabulous imagery, created by the Academy Award-winning animators of the tiger in Life of Pi.

THE MARTIAN VR EXPERIENCE

If you were wowed by the recently released film, The Martian, you will be blown away by

The Martian VR Experience, directed by Ridley Scott and Robert Stromberg. As one might expect from Scott, this is over the top in technical prowess and spectacular effects.

With amazing animation and thrilling scenery, this VR experience let you walk in astronaut Mark Watney’s spaceboots as he works hard to stay alive while hoping to be rescued.

Viewers can fly onto the surface of Mars, steer at zero gravity through space, drive a rover, and experience other key scenes from Ridley Scott’s hit film The Martian.
