SWEET VR: 2017 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL ART + TECH FUSIONS
The fusion of art and technology produced a beautiful collection of VR works at 2017 Sundance Film Festival. We are sharing some of our favorite experiences and installations with you below.
1. CHOCOLATE
Chocolate, a VR experience directed by Tyler Hurd, is a visual confection, with candy colored flowing landscapes and characters. Animated slick chrome kittens dance to the “Chocolate” song, by Giraffage. You are the designated robot god as you interact with the kitten herd.
2. HEARTCORPS: RIDERS OF THE STORYBOARD
Heartcorps: Riders of the Story Board, directed by Dandy Punk, Darin Basile, & Jo Cattell, is a giant virtual comic book that you can walk through.
Hand-drawn illustrations come to life as animated characters and virtual Cirque du Soleil performers move around you, using projection-mapping technology.
This "digital light poem" is an ode to artistry, spirituality, and self-sacrifice. The installation is augmented with live performances.
3. FULL TURN
Full Turn, by Benjamin Muzzin, is a mesmerizing kinetic-light sculpture series that can make 3D light forms appear to hover in midair. Created through a manipulation of back-to-back rotating screens, which can be seen from 360°.
Watch, as images transform into stunning free-form holograms. Watch the video.
Muzzin has created several of these sculptures for commercial brands, such as Hennessy and Harrods. See more of his work here.
4. MINDSHOW
Make your own VR experience with Mindshow, directed by Gil Baron, Jonnie Ross, & Adam Levin. It’s an easy-to-use app that enables you to make virtual reality cartoons, using your own body and voice.
You can create shows with your friends by passing scenes back and forth, and then share them on social media.
