BEAUTIFUL WILD GREY NOW
DAVID YARROW
The most beautiful black & white photographs have the most beautiful greys. Photographer
David Yarrow’s photos are magnificent evidence.
Yarrow is one of the top wildlife photographers in the world -- not just for the aesthetic quality of his images, but also because of the extreme measures he takes to capture the most unusual and extreme shots.
Yarrow travels to remote locations to photograph the most dramatic landscapes, indigenous cultures, and endangered animals.
While full color photos have their own joys and show their own range of detail, limiting the palette to grey scale, uniquely highlights mood, texture and contrast.
A former London-based hedge fund mogul, Yarrow gave up his grey suits and his posh life to pursue his artistic and conservation passions. His passion is astonishing… and it shows. He will go almost anywhere, do almost anything, and expose himself to almost any risk, to capture high drama.
Yarrow tries to find places that are too extreme, impractical or dangerous for others to go.
Yarrow once spent 35 hours-straight, without a break, waiting to get the perfect shot of a great white shark. He’s captured images of a charging rhino, and a great white shark about to devour a seal, among others.
While most of his intimate portraits of wild animals are taken with a sophisticated remote control setup, he has also risked his life to get the perfect picture. Sometimes he quakes in his boots and has the challenge of keeping the camera steady.
In some instances, animals have confiscated and even eaten Yarrow’s camera equipment.
Yarrow gets down and shoots up to get the unique perspectives of his up-close portraits.
Beyond being motivated by the beauty of the wild, Yarrow is motivated by a deep-seated despair about the fact that many of the world’s animal populations are dying out. He seeks to raise awareness with his photos.
Yarrow’s recently published book, “Wild Encounters,” features work from all 7 continents, capturing some of the earth's most endangered species. HRH Prince of Wales (aka Prince William, aka the Duke of Cambridge) has written the foreword to the book.
“David's images have the power to engage and influence our appreciation and knowledge of some of the planet's most extraordinary flora and fauna,” says Prince William.
All author royalties from the book will go to Tusk Trust, a conservation organisation in Africa, of which Prince William is patron.
Tusk supports more than 50 field projects in 18 African countries that not only work to protect wildlife, but also help to alleviate poverty through sustainable development and education amongst rural communities who live alongside the wildlife.
“More than this, his photographs bring into sharp focus the importance of preserving so many critically endangered species threatened by the destruction of their natural habitat and the burgeoning illegal trade in wildlife products.”
Conservation of wildlife remains a key objective for Tusk, with substantial funding being applied towards the protection of threatened species such as the beautiful grey elephant and rhino, as well as the cheetah, chimpanzee, mountain and lowland gorilla, African wild dog, & giant sable.
Yarrow is represented by some of the world’s leading galleries. His work is also permanently on display at the Perot Museum in Dallas and the new Museum of Natural History in Missouri.
Yarrow’s most recent exhibitions include showings at Fotografiska in Stockholm, La Photographie Galerie in Brussels, Holden Luntz in Palm Beach, and at London’s Somerset House.
