SECRET LIFE UNFURLS IN BEAUTIFUL EXPLODING EDIBLES NOW

MACIEK JASIK

Maciek Jasik turns fruits and vegetables into beautiful explosions. Why? Because it make magnificent images, of course.

The Polish photographer, best known for his portraits, became fascinated with the spiritual history of fruits and veggies -- stories mostly untold and unknown today.

Watermelons were once buried with Pharaohs to ensure their water supply in the afterlife. Buddha believed pomegranates were the most blessed fruits. Zeus turned the errant goddess Cynara into an artichoke. Balkan folklore regards squash as vampire veggies. And more...

To bring that magic to life, Maciek infused a selections of produce with colored smoke bombs, cutting holes in their sides to allow wafts and tendrils to escape in his still life series, The Secret Lives of Fruits and Vegetables.

The images have an otherworldly feel, and an edge that instills wonder, with a slight uneasiness, as squash, pineapples, horned melons, and other produce explode with color.

The deeply hued smoke swirling around edibles looks both magnificent and toxic. Some images look eerie and foreboding, while others feel light and breezy.

Smoke pouring out from punctures appears, in some cases, to look like liquid, in others, like clouds or vapor.

Jasik says that he hopes to “reach a balance between aesthetic, emotional, subtextual, and more mysterious concerns” through his work.
