THESE EDIBLE COLLECTIONS ARE BEAUTIFUL OBSESSIONS
JULIE LEE
Collections are obsessions of sorts. The bigger they are, the more pieces they contain, the more meticulous their detail, the more they are a product of the obsessed. And when they are artfully arranged, the more collections are in and of themselves masterpieces.
Photographer, stylist, and blogger Julie Lee, of Julie’s Kitchen, creates magnificent collections of food arranged as flat still lifes. She calls them “food collages,” yet they are not true examples of that art form. They are more temporary assemblages which she photographs and turns into fine art prints.
Lee began to arrange fruits and vegetables on flat surfaces as a way to showcase seasonal and local offerings from her Santa Monica neighborhood farmers markets.
Her creations were so beautiful, with endless combinations of colors, textures, and shapes, her food collages evolved into an ongoing project.
Lee studied plant design and color theory, as she progressed. It upped her game as she played with her food.
She expanded her sourcing to include harvests from her urban garden and neighborhood foraging. Nothing in her collections comes from a typical store.
She shoots either shoots her photos with a Canon 6D or iPhone 5 in her tiny kitchen, using natural light.
