MIND BLOWING SUSTAINABLE FASHION COLLECTION SHIFTS SHAPES & IDEAS

ZHUXUAN (AIMEE) HE

One of the most beautiful innovative new fashion collections we’ve seen was designed by a recently graduated student!

Meet the trained designer who shunned a degree in medicine to focus instead on creating beautifully crafted, sustainable clothing.

Check out the incredibly creative collection by Zhuxuan (Aimee) He. This 2016 University of Technology Sydney graduate, with an honors degree in Fashion & Textile Design, stunned audiences with her extraordinary clothing designs at the prestigious  Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival National Graduate Showcase.

He’s collection explores the connection between the body, the garment, and its surrounding space. It is so intriguing, so out-of-the-box, Björk rocked one of He’s dresses at a recent concert.

He’s designs were inspired by the traditional Japanese paper-folding art of origami. Folded materials form dynamic shapes and textures. They are influenced by nature, and the sea in particular. They also reference the traditional Japanese aesthetic called wabi-sabi -- the beauty of imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness.

Japanese artist Tokujin Yoshioka is He’s major design crush, as she cites the Honey-Pop chair, with its transformative honeycomb structure, as reference for her own designs.

He’s silhouettes are big and voluptuous, always changing as the body moves. They are at once organic and high tech, complex and simple, sophisticated and rough in feel.

Beautifully crafted, these pieces are all exquisite examples of sustainable design, using 100% recyclable, zero-waste materials, working with a zero-waste pattern making method. The garments are made up of all natural silk organza and wool wadding, both lightweight materials that work well with He’s structural demands.

While He’s initial plan was to create a 3D printed collection, that process became too complicated and challenging. He shifted to manually designing each piece, the old-fashioned way, using mathematics to figure out precise shapes and distances between each layer.

Sewing and construction takes about 2 weeks per garment. The dying process takes yet another week. The gradient origami dress is the most colorful piece in He’s collection. Her collection is so remarkable, it was also featured at the iD International Emerging Designer Awards.

He is currently studying for her masters degree. We can’t wait to see what thought provoking beauty her next collection has in store for us.
