THE INTENSITY OF COLOR IN SPARKS & REFRACTIONS NOW
MARC SIMON FREI
Marc Simon Frei is intense. He wears many hats—photographer, artist, and manipulator of electrical currents. His latest photography series, Tesla Sparks, is all about intensity of light, color, and power.
Frei creates small scale lightning storms using Tesla coil and photographs them to capture their intense glow. The coil generates alternating electrical currents. Frei brilliantly manipulates by arching different objects to the coil, bending the currents into little lightning-like bolts.
Frei creates soft woolen clouds, laced with colored LED lights, to add dimension and intensity to his storms. The mini-lightning bolts emanate from the clouds, just as regular lightning does.
The intense hue that the electricity emits as it passes through the wires and the air transfixes us. The tension between the lightning’s visual beauty and the physical dangers that it presents add its own layer of intensity to the work.
