BEAUTIFUL FOOD & WINE JUST UP THE RIVER
When we want beautiful food, we love to head north to the Hudson Valley. It’s a fertile valley, flanking the iconic river, that has been farmed for centuries.
The past few decades, however, the Hudson Valley has become a mecca for foodies and an important supplier to some of the best restaurants in Manhattan and surrounds.
VICTORY VIEW VINEYARD -- SCHAGHTICOKE, NEW YORK
The Hudson Valley is the oldest wine-producing region in the New World. And while it hasn’t rivaled California, Oregon, or Washington State, the quality of the wines coming out of Hudson Valley in the past decade has risen remarkably.
Victory View Vineyard is a family-owned farm winery specializing in growing cold climate grapes and producing award-winning farm bottled wines.
Victory View sustainably grows its grapes on well drained, rocky, and loamy soils. Frequent breezes help to keep the vines dry on the southern exposure.
Marquette is Victory View Vineyard’s signature “go-to” red grape. Marquettes are actually dark blue-black grown in tight clusters. They produce complex wine with a dark ruby color & good tannins, redolent of cherry, black fruit, pepper, & spice.
La Crescent is Victory View Vineyard’s main white grape. This amber fruit produces a unique white wine, with flavors somewhere between a riesling and a Gewürztraminer. Their unoaked, dry Charlotte has an intense nose of apricot, peach, and citrus with floral notes.
COACH FARM
Coach Farm produces some of the best artisanal goat cheese around, using traditional methods of the French farmstead cheesemaker.
The farm, located just two hours outside of New York City, manages over 900 French Alpine dairy goats. Their small, white-tiled creamery connects directly to the milking parlor, to produce the freshest cheeses!
ROSE HILL FARM -- RED HOOK, NEW YORK
Run by the Fraleigh family for 6 generations, Rose Hill Farm is a beautiful farm in a beautiful setting, just outside Red Hook, NY. Head to the Farm’s secluded orchards to pick apples, raspberries, pumpkins and sometimes even late peaches, and, of course their homemade pies and preserves.
RED MAPLE VINEYARD
Red Maple Vineyard is a boutique farm and vineyard 60 miles north of New York City, with spectacular views, overlooking the banks of the Hudson River.
This picturesque agricultural estate occupies 143 acres, with vineyards, orchards, vegetable & fruit fields, along with herb & floral gardens.
Red Maple Vineyard has been a beautiful setting for a number of film and photoshoots.
In addition to producing its own maple syrup, Red Maple Farm makes the preserves, jams, pickles, and hot sauces it sells. Its hens lay the eggs it sells.
MEAD ORCHARDS -- TIVOLI, NEW YORK
Mead Orchards, just outside of the town of Tivoli, is a gorgeous farm, founded in 1916. It produces a large variety of apples, including rare heirlooms, as well as sour cherries, on its 100 acres of orchard. The farm also grows vegetables, including specialty Caribbean crops.
CEDAR HEIGHTS ORCHARD -- RHINEBECK, NEW YORK
This pick-your-own apple 150-year old orchard, in Rhinebeck, is one of the most beautiful in the Hudson Valley. Lovingly run by Bill & Arvia Morris, Cedar Heights Orchard grows a variety of apples and makes wonderful cider. Its views of the Catskill & Taconic mountains are breathtaking.
Founded in 1946, The Culinary Institute of America, just outside Hyde Park, in the Hudson Valley, is the world’s premier culinary college.
