BEAUTIFUL EDIBLE ART FOOLS
YANN BERNARD LEJARD
Yann Bernard Lejard’s artworks are incredibly beautiful. Wait… he fooled us! We can eat them! They are actually plates of food.Lejard creates beautiful fools every time he prepares a meal. Using plates as his canvasses, he turns out unique modern expressionist pieces for each diner.
They don’t appear to be edible. And they are so extraordinary, we are tempted not to touch it with our forks and knives. But knowing that taste sensations, equally as extraordinary are in store, we dive in.
Born in Paris, raised in Montpellier, Lejard grew up in a home filled with art. He began cooking at the age of 6, and by the time he reached age 16, he graduated as a chef.
When Lejard was 20 years old, working at a restaurant in Marbella, Spain, he started to change all the plating without asking the Chef. And, in doing so, he got himself fired. They didn’t appreciate his budding genius.
It took a few more years for Lejard to really find his unique style. And his style is constantly evolving. 100% of his work is improvisation. He never draws or plans. He just taps into a natural flow.
Music inspires Lejard’s creativity but, while he listens to it often, he never listens to music when he is plating.
Having worked in the Middle East for many years, Lejard is also inspired by Middle Eastern culture and design, with its curves and graphic lines. Middle Eastern spices also serve as inspiration.
Lejard inspires his diners too -- sometimes to extreme. Quite a few people have requested photos of his platings which are then transformed into tattoos!
Lejard has worked on 1, 2, & 3-star Michelin restaurants over Europe, including work with Alain Ducasse at Plaza Athenée. Now, he is based in Bahrain at the Hotel Ritz Carlton Bahrain, as the Executive Chef for their fine dining establishment, Restaurant Plum.
But Lejard considers himself more as an artist than a chef. In fact, he doesn’t even like when people call him a chef!
