REFLECTING BEAUTY DOUBLES ITS IMPACT NOW

When something beautiful is mirrored, its impact is not only doubled, it reverberates exponentially. It can change perspectives. It can change minds. It can change the world.

Photographer Jaewoon U captures the double beauty of South Korea’s landscapes as reflected in its rivers and lakes. His images are dreamlike.

The twinned reflections in Jaewoon’s photos are so vivid and sharp, it’s hard to tell which elements are 3D and which are reflections, or even which way is up and which way is down.

There is hardly any distortion of color, light, or texture visible in the reflection, making it an even truer duplication.

The images have a double-powerful effect, first drawing us in through their visual intensity and elegance, showcasing the harmony and richness of South Korea’s landscapes. But the peaceful glory we see belies the truth. South Korea has long grappled with serious water crises. 

With only a few natural lakes and rivers, most of which have been challenged by pollution and poor management, the country experiences both floods and droughts every year. 

The Four Major Rivers Restoration project, an $18 billion initiative which began in 2008, has already begun to bring the country’s rivers, tributaries, and streams back from ruin. 

If all continues to go well, soon Jaewoon will have a lot more opportunity to deliver his brilliant double duty beauty.
