BEAUTY IS DIVERSITY NOW
ATLAS OF BEAUTY -- MIHAELA NOROC
Diversity adds strength and interest to our lives, physically, spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally, creatively, and more. Ideologies and practices that encourage homogeneity and those that denigrate differences, tend to suffer in the long run.
The Atlas of Beauty, a magnificent project by Romanian photographer Mihaela Noroc, presents the many diverse faces of beauty living on our planet right now. It is about our planet’s diversity shown through portraits of women.
"Beauty is diversity," says Noroc. She set out to discover as many variations and unique qualities as she could, traveling across more than 45 countries in the past 3 years, since her project began, taking photos of women she met along the way.
Noroc came to find that beauty is everywhere. She found that women in their natural, native state, regardless of their cultural or genetic origins, have incredible beauty, and that much of lies in their differences.
While cultures impose norms, pressuring community members to conform, they offer unique collections that add diversity to our world.
Noroc was surprised the find differences in the way beauty is seen in different cultures. She sometimes found that what was considered beautiful and trendy in one place seemed out of date, or ugly, in another.
Looking at Noroc’s diverse portraits as a collection, it’s fascinating to compare the beautiful faces of the world, noting the specific details that strike us as beautiful.
Thanks to Noroc’s father, a painter, Noroc grew up surrounded by colors. Beautiful diversity is in her blood. She loves to explore the unique and unnoticed beauty within each person she meets.
“Many people from all around the world face discrimination just because they have a certain color, religion, ethnicity or because they are women,” Noroc acknowledges. “ I think beauty is diversity and it can teach us to be more tolerant.”
Noroc aims to capture a diversity of inner and outer beauty, among the world’s diverse populations, to show them each how special they are.
“My goal is to continue for many years and capture beauty in all countries of the globe, if possible,” Noroc explains, “making this Atlas an inspiration for all women that try to be themselves, natural and authentic."
Today The Atlas of Beauty is doing its job well. It’s growing popularity is helping people around the world to better appreciate the beautiful diversity in our fellow humans, as well as in other species and life experiences.
Noroc could use our help and support so that she can continue to travel to new places to further document the diversity of beauty on Earth. You can add your support here.
