EXTREME PANORAMIC VISION IS BEAUTIFUL NOW

PANORAMA OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF -- YADEGAR ASISI

Sometimes you have to go to extremes to make a point or to attract attention.

Berlin-based architect & artist Yadegar Asisi went to extremes to raise awareness about the beauty and the plight of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR).

Asisi created an epic new 360° panoramic art installation, spanning 3,500 square meters, that mimics the GBR, offering an extreme immersive experience for all who enter. It is sure to inspire you, as well as teach you a thing or two.

The GBR is the largest coral reef on earth. It is increasingly threatened by pollution, climate change, oil spills, overfishing, dredging, and development. Corals all over the world are dying at unprecedented rates, which could hasten the destruction of one of the planet’s most diverse ecosystems.

To gather research and components, Asisi took 3 trips to the GBR, along with a team that included documentary filmmaker and conservationist Ben Cropp. They scuba dived and took thousands of photographs and videos used in the installation.

When you enter Asisi’s installation, which is staged inside a giant oil tank, you can’t help but be moved. This lifelike panorama, presented at a scale of 1:1, consists of 32-by-110 meter images projected onto a massive circular screen.  

Changing UV backlights mirror the time of day. A tranquil sea soundscape, by Eric Babak, heightens the experience. You will feel like you are immersed, under the sea, in the middle of some of the most beautiful life on earth.

The exhibition is currently on display at the Panometer Leipzig, in Berlin, until September 18, 2016.
