BEAUTIFUL BRAINS SOAR

Catching air high above snowy drifts and deep half-pipes accounts for the visual beauty and soaring spirit of this film, but that's only the half of it. Award-winning director, Lucy Walker's documentary about snowboarding champ Kevin Pearce, his meteoric rise, his devastating crash and resulting traumatic brain injury, and his miraculous recovery, shows the beauty of personal triumph, the love of family and community.

Lucy Walker, one of our favorite filmmakers, is known for her extraordinary aesthetic and sensitive portrayals of crises and their elevation to glory, as in her films “Waste Land,” about turning mountains of garbage into art,  and “Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom,” about hope in the wake of the 2011 Tohuku Quake. She delivers again, very powerfully, in “Crash Reel”.

We met up with Lucy and Kevin at Sundance Film Festival 2013, who told us about their #loveyourbrain campaign which spreads awareness about Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). 1.7 million people in the U.S. endure TBI each year and many of these accidents are preventable.

For more information about TBI, #loveyourbrain, and information about how to get involved in the campaign, visit the “Crash Reel” website.
