THE BEAUTIFUL POWER OF STORY AT SUNDANCE 2016

Stories entertain us, teach us, inspire us, soothe us, excite us, connect us, and more. They are powerful, whether they are big or small. Once oral, then pictorial, then written, then photographed, then filmed -- and now a massive paradigm shift is underway.  

New technologies are allowing storytellers to tell their stories in ways that bring us into their worlds, inviting us to be a part of it all. NANCY BENNETT -- TWO BIT CIRCUS

Nancy Bennett (CCO and head of virtual reality, Two Bit Circus) works with groundbreaking technologies and lucid cinematic storytelling. You’ve likely seen her pioneering work in virtual reality in TV, film, and advertising.  

Bennett has also developed awesome, live-action, stereoscopic 360-degree video capture and haptic-enabled playback for NFL, NBA, Indycar, and more.

JOHN UNDERKOFFLER -- OBLONG INDUSTRIES

John Underkoffler is co-founder and CEO of Oblong Industries, a leading player in the evolution of the human/machine interface.

Underkoffler is also credited with major innovations in holography, large-scale interactive visualization techniques, the I/O Bulb, and Luminous Room systems. He was science advisor to Minority Report, The Hulk, Aeon Flux, and Iron Man.

JOHN GAETA -- ILMXLAB, LUCASFILM

John Gaeta is the creative director for new media and experiences at Lucasfilm Ltd. and ILMxLAB.

Gaeta won an Academy Award for his work on The Matrix trilogy, where he developed innovations in form-breaking, such as "bullet time" and "volumetric cinematography" (a.k.a UCAP). And, check out Gaeta’s mind-blowing handiwork in Star Wars.

 

LYNETTE WALLWORTH

Australian artist and director Lynette Wallworth creates immersive installations and films that explore the relationships between people and the natural world.

Working with emerging technologies, Wallworth immerses us, offering us a much deeper level of experience. Her interactive installation, Evolution of Fearlessness, and her fulldome feature, Coral, included brilliant executions of augmented reality.

REGGIE WATTS

Reggie Watts is an internationally renowned musician/comedian/writer/actor who currently stars as the bandleader on CBS’s The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Watts is all about improv. He uses his voice, a keyboard, and a looping machine to create his musical stories. He refers to himself as a "disinformationist", aiming to disorient his audiences.
