BEAUTIFUL PERSPECTIVES SHOW US THE ART OF THE EARTH NOW
Photographer Fran Gormley takes her photos while flying thousands of feet above the earth in helicopters. The images have a painterly quality -- as they appear almost as abstractions of the landscape subjects.
Using a helicopter as a base is somewhat risky and treacherous, even though she flies with expert pilots. Gormley is often at the mercy of heavy winds, changing weather patterns, and rough terrain below.
The Sensuous Earth, Gormley’s latest series, was shot over some of the most inaccessible corners of the world. Her birdseye view is the only view.
Gormley’s images of Kazakhstan’s Altyn-Emel National Park reveal a spectrum of otherworldly color. She shows off the mountains and hot springs of Landmannalaugar, Iceland, in a way never before seen. Super-salty Lake Karum, in Ethiopia, looks like it is located on another planet.
Gormley brings another meaningful perspective to her work, beyond her views from above. She grew up in utter poverty before she lifted herself up to rise above it. She won scholarships and grants, graduating summa cum laude from Fairleigh Dickinson University, earning Masters in Social Psychology.
Gormley went on to build a very successful advertising career before following her photography passion.
Gormley studied at the International Center of Photography. Her first aerial shoot was of the Camargue, in France. She soon became hooked on the magnificence of aerial views.
