SEE MAGNIFICENT PRECISION-CUT PAPER LACE SCULPTURES
ERIC STANDLEY
Lace is essentially a bunch of beautifully designed holes. Usually, the body of fine lace is made of silk or cotton threads, but a lacy effect can be created in any material.
Artist Eric Standley cuts lacy holes in paper using a ULS CNC laser to create magnificent sculptures.
Each sculpture is made up of more than 250 sheets of archival paper that are stacked to create a 3D form.
Standley, who grew up in a family of engineers, cuts each sheet with extreme precision. He visualizes how the holes will stack up to form 3D designs.
The resulting sculptures look like super-intricate windows, with every line, color and edge considered.
“My work is inspired by geometry from Gothic and Islamic architectural ornamentation in an attempt to capture a reverence for the infinite,” Standley explains.
Standley works at the intersection of art, technology, history and mathematics. Calculating the cuts involves “obsessively detailed fractions.” He is a pioneer in the techniques used.
It can take over a year of intense work to create each piece, which further speaks to Standley’s passion. “I am interested in the conceptual migration from the permanence and massiveness of stone to the fragility and intimacy of paper.”

Standley received his B.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art and his M.F.A. from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Eric Standley is an Associate Professor of Studio Art for the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech.
