SEEING PLACES AS SPHERES OF BEAUTY NOW

Randy Scott Slavin turns places into spheres, capturing microcosms in beautiful form.

Slavin takes photos of places across the USA and manipulates them to create 360°spherical panoramas.

Taking the images to another level, Slavin then digitally mapped them as stereographic projections to create his Alternative Perspectives series.

The image manipulations produce serendipitous results. Slavin can't predict if a set of images will turn out a successful sphere until post-production.

It can take up to a hundred pictures of a scene to build up a 360° image. They are “stitched” together and mapped into a 3D rounded image within a flat plane.

The spheres feel surreal, as if they have touched upon the magical vortexes of each landscape and cityscape. Skyscrapers, trees and bodies of water all get spun into scenic 3D whirlpools. The warped illusions are reminiscent of M.C. Escher visions.

The award-winning photographer is also an award-winning director and aerial cinematographer. Based in New York City, he is founder of the New York City Drone Film Festival.

Slavin’s works have been published in Time Magazine, Gizmodo, Mashable, The Washington Post, Fast Company Design and other publications around the world.
