ART TAKES NEW SHAPES

Andy Gilmore. Dream Millennium. (2013)

Geometry is part of most art, visual and otherwise, as it is part of most things. Here is a curated showing of incredible new art that specifically celebrates the beauty of geometry in a wide range of media -- from paintings, to sculptures, to GIFs and animations.

1. ANDY GILMORE

Andy Gilmore paints his love for geometry kaleidoscopically. Some look like intricate Amish quilts. Some look like disco balls. Some look like psychedelic exercises.

They are incredibly colorful and mathematically undeniable. He often references musical structures and sound waves. In all, the effect is hypnotic.

Gilmore is like an Adobe poster boy. He created all of his works simply with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

2. SPARTH

Sparth (nicolas bouvier) has been an active artistic director and concept designer in the gaming industry since 1996. Born in France, he now lives in Seattle, Washington, working for Microsoft. His paintings play with geometric shapes, creating luminous alien landscapes, with clean lines and shadows.

3. FRANCESCO LO CASTRO

The geometric paintings of Italian artist Francesco Lo Castro work hard at making 2 dimensions look like more.

Simple parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids are layered, in a time-consuming layering process using acrylic, spraypaint, silkscreen and layered epoxy resin.

Lo Castro explores and explodes shape and form. His paintings are embodiments of the universe… as if he had a premonition about the new geometric origins of the universe theories we reported on Tuesday in our post Geometry -- The Source of All Beauty.

4. ANDRES AMADOR

Andres Amador does sand the way Sonja Hinrichsen and Simon Beck do snow. He uses a rake to create temporary works of art, featuring beautiful geometric shapes.

Like his snow-art compadres, he spends many hours creating these giant masterpieces. Some are more than 100,000 sq. ft. And then the sea comes to create its own art and wipes his “canvas” clean.

Amador uses a rope as a guide so that he can make the geometric patterns. He rakes up the wet sand at low tide and uses varying levels of dampness/dryness to make contrasting sand colors.

Check out Andres On Facebook and Visit His Web Site where you can buy prints of his designs.

5. DANCING CIRCLES

Check out Dancing Circles, a short animated film in which iterated inversions in tangent circles create hyperbolic tilings. Made in Ultrafractal.

6. DECLOUD

Could this be your fashion future? Check out this post-Jetson 3D Fashion Animation Urban Geometry video.

7. MATTHEW DIVITO

Matthew DiVito, aka Mr.Div, is one the best GIF animators today. He’s an aspiring game developer and he’s got it down. We don’t want to stop watching this dancing geometry. You can find more on his Tumblr. And check out one of his games right here.

8. ROMANOWSKY

This is a cool video in which geometric shapes are the stars. Watch this design, reminiscent of Native American art, come alive. Gorgeous geometry at play.

9. TAO TAJIMA

Take a Night Stroll through a geometric light show in this beautiful animated short by Tao Tajima. (via be con in riot)

10. KIT WEBSTER

Prismatica is a mesmerizing light installation by Kit Webster. Pyramid-shaped crystals on an LCD screen are lit with programmed precisely mapped geometric animations. As you watch, your perspective shifts and refractions change. The effect is like a beautiful jeweled kaleidoscope.
