THESE PET PORTRAITS WILL LIFT YOU & MOVE YOU NOW
We are sharing the extraordinary works of 3 photographers who elevate the art of pet portraits to create astonishingly beautiful images and inspire support for rescues.
1. JESSICA TRINH
Vibrant color and sweet old-fashioned staging make photographer Jessica Trinh’s pet dog portraits grab your attention and touch your heart.
Now 20, Trinh (aka Sprinkle Happiness) has been photographing dogs since she was 13. She began with her first dog, a golden retriever, named Chuppy, who has since passed away.
Trinh’s current pets, Daisy, an Australian Shepherd mix, and Kodi, a Golden Retriever, who she adopted from a local shelter, have not only inspired Trinh to continue to develop her pet portrait series, but to expand their impact.
Project Let It Rain Love, Trinh’s latest series, features portraits of 40 shelter and rescue dogs. Sales proceeds go to help the care of these animals. They have also inspired a number of adoptions.
Tranh is currently working on a book of photos, entitled The Art of Dog. See more of her work on her Flickr page, and on her website.
2. ELKE VOGELSANG
There are many ways pets save people’s lives -- bringing them comfort and joy, enhancing their health, and lengthening their days. But when a pet intervenes in a life-threatening situation, saving someone from certain death, it has a profound impact.
When photographer Elke Vogelsang’s 3 beloved dogs, Noodles, Scout, and Ioli, found her husband lying on the ground after he collapsed from a brain hemorrhage, they alerted her in the nick of time so she was able to get him the emergency help he needed.
Vogelsang took a series of photos of the dog heroes and shared them with her husband all throughout his recovery and rehabilitation. She shares them in her new book, Nice Nosing You: For the Love of Life, Dogs and Photography, featured in this week’s Nature Science Daily Fix.
WIth a whimsical eye and a genius lens, Vogelsang’s pet portraits almost look like cheeky old masters paintings.
Vogelsang works as a people and pet photographer, primarily in Hildesheim, Germany, although she also works internationally.
She provides her photographic services free of charge for several animal protection and welfare organizations.
3. CARLI DAVIDSON
Dog shakes become art, as photographer Carli Davidson captures them.
Her new book, Shake Puppies, is a collection of photos of 61 puppies, caught in slow motion, with water droplets flying, fur flinging and twisting, jowls flapping, and ears flopping in momentous ballet.
It is a follow-up to her 2013 book, Shake, which featured high-speed photos of adult dogs caught mid-shake.
Davidson’s photos will make you smile for many reasons. First, the expressions captured on each furry face, as it tosses in reckless abandon, will tickle your heart. And as you read Davidson’s text, you will be moved by her passionate advocacy for animal adoption.
Davidson professionally photographs disabled pets, exotic wild animals, and a wide variety of cats and dogs. She got her start photographing the animals at the Oregon Zoo when she was on staff there.
See more of Davidson’s work on her website. You can purchase her prints here.
